Would reaching someones vitals require more penetration than an equivalent 1 inch in wall board?
 
I always wonder about "the rest of the story" when people say they are going to use Buckshot because it can go through walls. Consquently they pick some sort of bird shot.

Yes! IIRC 12 inches is the vitals standard in ballistic gelatin. Birdshot is for birds. Check out #1 Buck for inside the house.

Realistically, if it will do damage to the vitals, it probably will go through more than 2 sheets of drywall.
 
IIRC, Hatcher's Notebook indicated that the Army considered anything that would punch through 3/4 inch plywood to be "dangerous". Have not tried plywood v. birdshot, but having killed airbreathing critters with birdshot, it will work at (!!!) very close range - like in my bedroom.
 
Sorry to straighten you out but shot comes in various sizes not just 'bird ' or 'buck' . Ability to penetrate depends on the size of the shot .So are you talking about #9, #4 #1 Buck, 00 Buck ?? For what I have available I'd grab BB steel goose loads or 00 Buck .I wouldn't trust anything smaller to stop the BG which is the prime objective !!! :p
 
The exit hole was a lathe an plaster. Much harder but might be a little more brittle. So it might have a tendency to shatter as opposed to drywall that seems to me would be harder to penetrate. Drywall is more dense but softer, imo.

And what does IIRC mean?
 
There are two untruths connected with shotguns for home defense. Both have been stated as fact by gunzine writers.

The first is that if you use bird shot [7 1/2, say], you can take out an intruder without any danger to anyone else in the house because the shot won't penetrate a wall.

The second is that by using bird shot you "fill the room with a cloud of shot" that can't possibly miss.

We have seen the first myth "busted." As for the "cloud of shot", a normal shot spread is about 1" for each yard. So at three yards, or 9 feet, the pattern is about 3" in diameter, hardly a spread that "can't miss."

As any serious shooter can attest to,, there just ain't no wall of shot and you are pretty close on the spreads depending on the choke. I just don't know where all the myths come from, certainly not from anybody that knows anything factual
 
two shots. center mass. judging from pattern, w/in 10'
chest, shoulders contained many entry holes. No details on exit wounds,if any.

I like the concept of the safety disc, but I wouldn't dare trust it unless I could really test it out and make sure it will really work well.

i do beleive that most all the time any hit from a shotgun is going to stop someone, not so much by a physiological standpoint but by the realization by them that holy $#@%#!~!! i just got shot in the chest with a shotgun.

However being that we cant rely on them having any sense, especially since they put themselves in such a situation they got shot....you are going to have to go for rapid blood loss/disruption of the nervous system. Thing i would not rely on small birdshot doing.

saftey disk is definitly interesting though i am doubtful, until i see what it can do.

the video above, w/ the guys shooting in the wedding...all i have to say is :eek: and they should all be in jail!!!!
 
Best SD loads??

I don't know what anyone else uses, but when in a situation where you have to shoot, over penetration is not on my mind, I like #4 buck myself. If that won't stop someone center mass (improved cylinder), I will have very little faith left in my 12, and trade it in for a LAW...
