bigger than 45/70?

New member
looking for a gun with stupid power but also reativly cheap.. so no 50 bmg:mad::mad: but i was looking at some single shot rifles made by h&r chambered in 45/70, 50ae and a couple others.. leaning to the 45/70 but are there any other single shot rifles that arnt crazy expensive bigger than 45/70
 
I have an H&R, guide gun, and a Ruger number 1 in 45-70. Run everything from 900fps to the Garrett retina detaching loads. Look around people have taken the guide gun to Africa for the big six and Alaska for bears and moose so its capable for the big gun boom.

Another solid choice is the 500 S&W H&R single shot. My shooting buddy has one and that has a pretty good push for recoil and noise. Its expensive to shoot from the factory but I figure you have to pay to play. There used to be a guy who made a 700 grain bullet which moved along nicely and killed on both ends.
 
.45-90, .50-70, .50-90 are all readily available but not all are cheap. Try doing a search on Sharps and Rolling Blocks. The imports MIGHT be what you're looking for.
 
I use a 535 gr Postell bullet in my Browning 1895 45-70. Super accurate at long ranges.

I found you don't need velocity to make those heavy BP loads shoot, too much velocity causes them to tumble. I keep my load between 1100 to 1200 FPS.
 
The Ruger No. 1 is available in .458 Lott which has plenty of "stupid power". They can be found for under a grand new, and if you look around you might find a great deal on used one complete with a box of 19 rounds.
 
A rifled 12 gauge slug gun with Dixie slugs is about as much gun as you can get. 870 grains of hard cast lead at .730 caliber and 1,200 fps in the H&R bull barrel rifled shotgun. Taylor K.O. of 109
 
The .458 winchester magnum has been around for a long time and had some popularity so there are always a fair amount of used rifles available to buy. The ammo isn't as rediculously expensive as the more exotic dangerous game cartridges either. So If you're on a quest for stupid power this is a good step up from .45-70 hot loads.

Have you tried the Dixie IXL DGS Slug? http://dixieslugs.com/products.html BTW, check out the thread by Hubel458 - 12 Guage slugs from IIell. He can get over 40,000 ft lbs. If you are looking for "more gun" take some of his tame ideas which are crazy and then you get to his serious loads which are beyond anything I have ever seen in a rifle/shotgun.
 
If you reload for the 45/70 like me get some 525 pile drivers and garrett and all the big fat bullets you can get
 
"stupid powerful" if you are looking for more power there are many cartridges more "powerfull" than the 45-70, even the 450 Marlin ( which looks like the 45-70, but a fraction longer, so it can't be chambered in older weaker guns )in factory loadings is slightly "hotter" than the 45-70... there are a pleathera of belted magnums that are more "powerful" than the 45-70... if you are looking for a bigger bore... you almost need to go to 50... there are several .475's but they are more obscure ( reads more expensive / harder to get ammo for etc. ) I have a custom Marlin lever action in 50 A.E. that I load a heavy cast bullet for, the conversion turned my sweet little 44 mag lever into a litteral beast that required glassing up the foreend to keep it from rattling apart under recoil... I also like the old 50-70 Gov. but that is not as hot a cartridge as the 45-70 can be loaded to...

the 500 S&W in a rifle would be a bigger bore & a monster to shoot... there is also a 50 Alaskan, that's generally chambered in lever actions, & that is more powerful than the 45-70

I've been expirementing with both a custom 53 caliber rifle, & the 577 Snider, but these are both low pressure rounds, so while the bores are much bigger, they are no match for even the 50 A.E as far as power, & the 500 S&W probably ( I've never looked up the energy ) but is likely twice the energy of the 50 A.E.

My father has a 450 nitro express. It is more powerful than any of my 45/70s. As far as I know the 450 nitro express is the smallest of the nitro express rounds. The current biggest is the 700 nitro express with a few rumors of an 800 nitro express on the way.

The down side is that his gun (the 450 NE) is a single shot. Where my Marlin Cowboy holds 9+1 rounds and my SBL holds 6+1

The 45/70 "can" kill any animal on earth. That said I think I would go with some thing bigger if I was going to hunt Black Death.

For a big bore long distance gun I dont know of anything that can touch a 50 BMG. That said as far as I am aware I dont think the 50 BMG is legal to hunt with in most of Africa because it is a military cartridge

I know you said that the 50 BMG is out of the question. Another option is a 51 Kodiak, as far as I know it is the most powerful lever action rifle you can get. The 50 Alaskan is all so an option and there is more load data out there than for the 51 Kodiak. I know I am recomneding Lever action guns but that is because that is what I know. I am sure there are many fine big bore bolt guns or automatics out there.

I think that unless you plan to hunt Africa then the 45/70 is enough gun for anything. I know a lot of people brag about the 500+ grain bullets but to me I think the optimal size for 45/70 bullets is 400-425 grains for things like Elk, Buffalo, Moose and lighter bullets if you are hunting Deer.

If you really want to try out heavy bullets for the 45/70 you can try the 525 grain Piledriver from Bear Tooth Bullets or the 550 grain Crater bullets from Jae-Bok Young
