Big old toothy grin...

A friend of mine just got his M 1 from the DCM. He hasn't handled one since the early 1960s, when he qualified on one in college ROTC.

He was showing it to me the other night. It's early Korean War vintage, definitely been used, but in good mechanical shape.

He was looking down the bore with a light, and all of a sudden said "Oh Wow! That's a bad ding! I didn't notice that before." He told me what he was seeing, and where it was in the barrel...

So, I took a look at it. My response?

"Uh, Bob, that's your gas port opening...." :)

Sometimes that works out in one's favor, though. I bought a "broken" heavy barrel Remington once for $25.00, the yard sale purveyor thought something was terribly wrong with the thing because the heavy barrel's stepped-down muzzle moved in and out, so the gun was only good for parts.

And thus began my collection of Remington Model 8 and 81 autoloaders!
