Big Mistake?

Hey yall. Back in April I purchased a Mossberg 500A Persuader 8 shot, as I missed the feel of my 5-shot Mariner. So for the first month or so I loved the gun, although front heavy. Then I started looking more and more @ my 870 Express, which has an 18 1/2'' barrel, 4+1....and the more I thought about it, the more I realized that I made a mistake, as I would have rather had a more compact and light shotgun like my 870. So then I screwed up and traded my 100% Persuader for a like new Mossberg 500A field model, with a 28'' vent rib barrel and a 24'' rifle sight slug barrel. Although the finish on the gun is damn good, and the wood grain is beautiful, after just now shooting the thing is believe I made an even bigger mistake. This 500 has more recoil than my Stoeger SxS and my 870. I just don't understand. I have no idea what to do. Right now I've only got $225 tied up in the whole deal, as I traded my Persuader outright, but I paid $25 bucks for the extra barrel. As of right now I'm stuck with a shotgun I do not even want. Any suggestions would be greatly appreciate!
 
Sell the guns you don't want, at a fair price, and get the one you want. Learn from your mistake and don't repeat. That's what happens when you disrespect Big Green.:D Call Madame Kalalu and request an intervention.

P.S. Next time get an extention for the 870.

Your M-500 may fit your perfectly where Gerogian's doesn't fit him. With shotgun kick, stock fit can make the difference between a sweetheart and an angry mule.

One of the things that make us "seasoned" shooters is the trial and error of shooting different scatterguns. My gun safe has several guns that either did not make the grade for me, or I am still thinking about them. I have also traded or sold off many models that did not work for me. There is nothing wrong with this, it is part of the fun of getting seasoned!

A couple of ideas; Try and find a buddy or shooter who has your next "lust after" model and see if you might try it out first. Just might save you a buck or two.

I stand firmly on the ground that most recoil issues are directly related to Length of Pull. You might check and see what the LOP of your 870 is and compare that to the LOP of your Mossberg.

The Mossberg has an aluminum receiver. This makes it a good bit lighter than the Rem 870 with a steel receiver. I also recommend looking at a better recoil pad. Spending $50, and probably a lot less, on a recoil pad can easily double the utility value of a gun.

You're right in that regards, but my friend who is 5'2" and she also weighs in at about 105-110lbs doesn't mind it either... I think I may have forgot to mention that I've got a Knox Tactical Stock on mine as well.

The OP appreciates the grain of his M-500A's factory wood stock, I doubt he'd see a Knox in the same light. ;)

Your 8 shot Mossberg is a "whopping" inch and a half longer than the Remington. Since it has an aluminum receiver, it weighs less, which is why it recoils more.
 
Well, my ultimate goal was to make it a HD shottie, with an 18 1/2'' barrel. The Mariner I had a couple years back did not recoil near as much, but then again it also had a thicker recoil pad from factory. Also, the damn forend rattles like heck is this normal?
 
I have an older mossberg 500 with a smoothbore slug barrel, and the forend does rattle but not very bad. The recoil of my mossberg is quite stiff but it is tolerable.
 
I prefer the Mossberg for various reasons (lightweight, safety, action release) but the Remington is excellent also.

If you want another Remington, then get one.

If the guns weigh the same, no it doesn't - it just doesn't fit you as well as the others -

I just fired off a new SxS today - a 20 that weighs over a pound less than my 20 target gun - and it has nothing but a bare wood butt plate, yet no pain, no bruises, nothing...why? Because it FITS me....get your gun to fit and it won't hurt
