Big gun confusion

I always thought that the .44mag was stronger than .45colt. Now I hear that the .45 is better in hunting. How is that? What are the attributes of each caliber? Wouldn't one just get the .44mag. Doesn't the best .44mag round best the .45colt round?

In a modern gun, the .45 Colt can be handloaded to better the power of factory .44 Mag.

In handloading, the strong case design of the .44 Mag. allows you to get more power out it.

Simply put, the .44 Mag. is more potent than the .45 Colt. Sometimes.

Also simply put, the .45 Colt is more potent that the .44 Mag. Sometimes.

Clear as mud, no? :)

Beware the man with the S&W .357 Mag.
Chances are he knows how to use it.

With modern cases, the .45 Colt can be loaded to equal the .44 Magnum in power, give or take a few foot pounds. But the .45 Colt is chambered in a lot of old and weak guns, so factory loads must be kept to low pressures.

One guy I knew loaded two .45 Colt loads, one for his Ruger and one for his old Colt SAs. He got mixed up and blew the cylinder on a first generation, 4 digit serial number. One unhappy camper.

try to take a look at this website www.sixgunner.com
it will tell you more than i can on the .45 colt.
the .45 colt, if the shells and guns are equal, will produce more energy than the .44 mag at lower or the same pressures.

Democracy is two wolves and a lamb voting on what is for lunch.
Liberty is a well armed lamb contesting the outcome of the vote.
Let he that hath no sword sell his garment and buy one. Luke 22-36
They all hold swords, being expert in war: every man hath his sword upon his thigh because of fear in the night. Song of Solomon 3-8
The man that can keep his head and aims carefully when the situation has gone bad and lead is flying usually wins the fight.

In a modern Ruger, 45 Colt has the same ballistics capabilities of 44 Magnum with less pressure. Less pressure does not necessarily mean less recoil. Those hot 45 Colt loads hurt as much or more than a 44 Magnum. In Smith & Wesson, 44 Magnum is still king.

When it comes to hunting or woods defense, 41 Magnum, 44 Magnum and 45 Colt will completely penetrate any game in North America from head to tail. Dead animals can't tell what they got hit with. These calibers ALL rate in the 20+ TKO range. What's better depends on what you can get your hands on and your likes and dislikes. What you are willing to spend on ammunitions and if you reload or not. The best gun is the gun you feel completely confident with. Those are the guns that successfully kill big game.

Robert hit the head on the nail. All three of those cartridges are in the BIG league.

Bout the only thing to get picky about would be bullet performance. Takes a good bullet to expand and still stay together when it is hitten that hard.

I think the case of the 44 Mag is stronger because the brass is thicker in critical areas. Therefore the 45 has more case capacity which may not be the best thing! :o
