M1A/M14 never supplied over 80 nations with a battle rifle. Even though M1A may nudge out the FAL in accuracy(debateable), the FAL have been more popular worldwide.

What is it, 94 Nations went with the FAL?
Didn't Germany want the FAL for its Army too?

Yup.

How long does it take to pull out the bolt on an FAL? What, 2 seconds? Cleaning it and putting it back only takes about a minute?

Yup.

Not bad. You can get them... Century L1A1s for about 400 to 500 bucks too. Not bad. And its compaired to M1A1s and G3s? Nice... Hey how much are those? Quick math quiz:
How Many L1A1s can you buy for the price of 1 M1A1 or 1 G-3?
2, maybe 3? Think about that. Or with the money saved - you could pick up a nice Aimpoint or other scope for it... maybe have it tricked a bit too... Not bad.

The FAL is the best thing going for a .308 cal battle rifle. 400 bucks gets you into the FAL game... Can't touch that for bang for the buck. Mine was a little more - about 900 worth of trade for it, but it was worth it. Correia is still enjoying it. Not bad.

Great rifle the FAL.
Oh... BTW...
Moving this to RIFLES.

Nice, what kind of scope is that? There were a lot of FALs at the TFL meet in PA, and I've got the bug to accessorize.

If I could get $5 mags for the M1A, I might be interested. ;)

Judging from the number of FAL's at the PA TFL shoot (3, among 8 members who showed up) and the lack of any M1As,the FAL sems to be the way to go.

Now I am going to have to get one, if for no other reason to show Soda Pop how to maintain and operate a rifle properly :D

Sorry, guys. My vote still goes to the M14, even tho I like the FAL.

You don't need to pay top-dollar for an M14/M1A. I built mine for
about 700$. The most expensive parts were the barrel and the
receiver. Yes, I had to wait a little longer to get mine, but it was
worth it. It is a rifle that I can say that I built myself (maybe that's
why I don't stumble around in the brush with it so much anymore).

When I was in the US Army in the 1960s, we were issued used M14s. In Basic Training it took me nine rounds to zero in my M14.

At the range, I could easily and consistently hit the automated half man size targets from 50 to 300 meters over open sights. I was less consistent over 300 meters. And, I do not consider myself a good shot.

Can a FAL produce or exceed that kind of performance for a run-of-mill shooter? Or, is the question too subjective?

This is why I love it here guys. You're all honored bound to your rifles, and yet, no name calling. Damn, does it get any better than this. Thanks guys for being civil in the discussions.

George, the FAL is off at AZEX being re-parked and tweaked. Can't wait for it to get back. It is a beauty now, I'm excited to see what it will be like when it gets back. :D

MOA,

I'm a godawful shot offhand. I have no experience with it at all. For the first time in 20 years, I attempted offhand with a friend's FAL(from the bench, it was 1MOA)-- I'd never shot one before. At 100yd, I put 20 rounds in a 4 inch group and fell in love. I couldn't believe how accurately I could shoot it. I really am terrible with open sights, but this gun was SO easy to shoot. Unfortunately, I'm in the PRK and can't buy one. But man, it's such a sweet rifle. (On the other hand, my M1A arrives any day...I've just always wanted one.:) )
