Big bores, small guns

I was checking out some Tarus titanium's today, like the feel and the weight but I have yet to hear from anyone who's shot one.
The ones in the dealers case were .45LC, understand they make it in .41 mag also. My first thought is that recoil must be terrific, and if I bought one I might go with .357 mag. I shoot full-house .357's & .41 mags but they're large frame guns.

My first thought is that the guys who have shot one can't respond. Typing is hard with a broken wrist.

I have heard that due to the short barrel that there is a huge muzzle flash and a big loss in velocity. If I were buying one, I would go with the .357 mag as you said.

YMMV I have not run any small big bores over a chrono.

I have the Titanium in .45 Colt (450T) and I love it. It certainly contacts semi-solid objects with a lot of force. I will try to pass some bullets through the chrono this week for you guys.

Recoil is not that bad...Taurus understands how to use porting.

Jim,
An unpleasant thought and fortunately not quite accurate. Due to the porting and the type of grip Taurus developed, the recoil is manageable.

Jeff Cooper related having received a .45Colt specimen from someone and found it to be not unpleasant to shoot. A search of his Commentaries archives would yield the entire report but such a search would take awhile as there is no search function. IIRC it was earlier this year.

Because of the short barrel on these big bore snubbies, they are definitely meant for social work at "intimate" distances.

If you're not a little upset with the way the world is going, you're not paying attention.

Cooper's report had a little to do with me buying mine. If he likes something, it's normally pretty good. My mom has the 617T (.357 mag) but only uses it with .38's. As I said, recoil is definately manageable, and I really like it.

I don't know about the Tauruses, but my 342ti is about more unpleasant to shoot with .38's as is my Colt Anaconda with full house .44 mags.

Once again...

Snivel and Whine doesn't know how to make a good lightweight revolver. Their Airweights are absolutely terrible.

Taurus lightweights, OTOH, kick much ass. They're a handful, certainly, but no worse than a Python or Anaconda with HOT loads. The combination of titanium frame (not just the cylinder, a la S&W), porting, and Ribber grips tame the beast in short order.

Really? I'm so glad you told me. I guess I didn't know enough to dislike my SMITH & WESSON 638, which is reliable and accurate, but alas, utter crap. Somebody better call S&W and tell them the last 50 years of producing snubbies has been for naught.
The Tauruses you mention all come with porting. This causes 1) extreme loudness and muzzle flash, 2) a collection of stubborn leading caught by said ports (if you use lead bullets), and 3) velocity loss - one magazine chrono'd the .45 LC doing like 600 fps. Additionally, you had better have the thing at arm's length unless you want a face full of blowback too. Oh, and if you're lucky they won't LOCK UP on you. Boy, Taurus sure has accumulated a WEALTH of knowledge in their 2 YEARS of making ultra-light snubbies.
I swear, the only thing around here more tiresome than S&W bashing is all the Taurus glorifying going on here. They're good guns and they give away NRA memberships, but lets not get out of hand with it. The other FFL's around here won't even take them in on trade. That says a lot to me.

Grapeshot: I have never owned a Taurus and agree with you about the implications of their design. But I have shot a LOT of S&W through the years and find that they do have some weaknesses.

Politics aside, both their small and medium framed revolvers just don't have the proper trigger finishing that they used to have. It is really hard to like a revolver with a creepy, rough trigger.
