BHP main spring question.

I just bought used BHP Practical model, to replace the one I traded off last year. This one has a MUCH stiffer main spring than my old one. It is somewhat of a struggle to pull the slide fully to the rear at times (not a problem with the hammer cocked), so I’m thinking about changing it out myself. I do plan on putting a couple of hundred rounds through it before making any changes.

I was looking at the Wolfe Springs website today and may decide to replace the recoil spring with the 18.5 lb, and possibly the firing pin spring (if recommended), while I’m at it.

My questions are as follows:

Will the main spring improve with use (100, 5000, 20,000 rds from now)? I have no idea how many rounds have been put through the gun, but it is tight as a drum and shows no wear. My other BHP was not this tight, even when new.

Which hammer spring (weight) would you recommend (if any)?

Is there anything tricky or difficult about changing out the main spring?

If I lighten the recoil spring to 18.5 lbs, should I install a heavier firing pin spring? .

Thanks!

The 18.5# recoil spring is a good choice and will work well for you.

I am assuming by "main spring" you mean the hammer spring. Factory standard is 32# but that is pretty heavy, IMHO. I use a 26# or 28# with no failures to detonate a primer no matter what ammo I've used. I am very leery of going lower than that, though. I've tried 24# and have had some failures, though not many. I think that C&S has a 22# spring in their kit for the BHP, but that is WAY too light, IMO. I tried the kit once and the trigger was so light that it wasn't crisp and I had failures to ignite the primer. I WAS using a standard strength firing pin spring, though, so that was a contributing factor.

If you don't want to experiment, the Wolff site lists the factory standard springs for the BHP.

My personal set-up:
Recoil spring: Was 18.5# recoil spring with a Shock-tec recoil shock absorber, now a variable power at factory standard weight with the Shock-tec
Firing pin: standard
Extractor spring: extra power
Mag release spring: extra power
Hammer spring: 26# or 28# (I forget which one)

Go to www.fnhipower.com for instructions on replacing the hammer spring. I dislike doing it because it hurts my delicate little hands but I've gotten to where I don't mind it since I've dropped my machismo and started using tools.

hdm25: Thanks. I did a lot of reading over at the fnhighpower site and concluded that I'll just break it in with a lot of shooting, and play it by ear.
