BFR Calibers

I want a Big Ef Revolver. For a while I have been considering a .460s&wMag. The performance out of a 10" barrel revolver is nothing short of amazing, IMO. Pricwe of the round is $60-80 for 20rnds is scary. Now I have been shopping the other BFR's. 30-30, .444, 45/70 are all big handgun rounds. I know from shooting my 30-30 Marlin Lever that the round is very potent for almost any game animal. I have not found any data for 30-30 out of a 10" revolver. It wasnt intended for it. The same goes for the .444 and 45/70. Any body know of a balistic comparison for the rounds or have some real world experience. The only other handgun I know of that fires all of them is the TC and should have comparable performance with a 10" barrel.

Toward the bottom of the page it lists the different calibers with some bullet/velocity data. To me the 30/30 doesn't look too impressive.

I bought the 460 last year. It's a lot of fun. Shooting most of these calibers almost requires reloading. Otherwise you won't be doing a lot of shooting.
 
Having shot the 30-30 I can tell you it was not much fun to shoot. The 45/70 is much more pleasant even with fairly hot rounds. The 30-30 torques to much for my liking.

If I were going to buy one it would be the 45/70. Wish I could find one in double action.

It doesnt look like anything even comes close to the .460swm. Its fast and hits very hard. Plus I have the .454 & .45lc options. I have never owned or shot a MR product. I like single action revolvers especialy for the intended use (hunting, range)of this one. How is the quality of this revolver -vs- the S&W X frames?
 
if 444 is offered. you could also shoot 445 super mag, 44 magnum, & 44 special in the same gun... just as an FYI...

I've wanted a 45-70 for a long time, but I'd likely do a 444 if I bought one today... er... maybe

They are very high quality revolvers. Not Freedom Arms level, but I'd say maybe a small step up over a Ruger Super Blackhawk. Which is basically what the BFRs are, a really beefy SBH. Essentially a Super Super Blackhawk:)
In fact a lot of the parts appear to be shared with the SBHs.

I'm not familiar enough with the Smith X frames to know how the crafsmanship compares between the two.

This may be possible, but not recommended.
 
.444 is 0.470" at the base, 44 mag is 0.457". Doesn't sound like much but it can cause case ruptures. My 444 Contender would split the sides of 44mag brass most of the time.
 
They offer a lot of good choices caliber choices. I may go by availability once my permit comes in (im in NJ). I will definately hunt deer with it. And lets face it a .38 will kill a deer. So anything else is overkill. I want that extra firepower in case I do get the chance to take on larger game like moose, bear, elk, etc... In most cases I will probably have my 30-06 with me as an alternative.
 
Whatever the caliber in a big revolver like that, you need to do your own reloading for it..........period.

Cheap, easy to reload straight walled cartridges and will save you lots of money. For me, it's as much fun as shooting.
 
I took the dive today and put a .460 on order. I had the chance to put the BFR side by side with the XVR. Both are awesome revolvers. The grip angle on the S&W wins out for me. I cant wait to get it in.
As someone said reloading setup is going on order also. This will give me an excuse.
 
NJ sucks. I have to wait until my permits go through in order to take it home. On the upside it has kept me from buying several guns that I didnt really need. Ha- as if there is such a thing.
