Beware POSSIBLE gun buy sting.

When selling your guns, make sure you’re following the law! This was probably not a sting, but it got me thinking that this could have been very serious.

Over the weekend I found a potential buyer for a handgun I have for sale. I met the buyer at a neutral location of his suggestion, a gas station. I always prepare a bill of transfer for both parties benefit (I just like to CYA; so buyer has proof of the date purchased and seller has proof of the date sold). Seller had offered a partial trade for a POLICE Mossberg 500A Riot gun and cash for my Beretta. It was a pretty good deal for me and I was looking forward to it. Seller showed up with a friend who waited in the car.

Seller seemed too young to buy the handgun and his license revealed he was only 19. I questioned him on this and he said that he really wanted to buy the handgun. He kept pressing the point. When I told him I wouldn’t sell it to him he suggested that I sell it to his friend. Again, I said no and I explained to him that would be a straw purchase and still illegal. I walked away from what was a pretty good deal and felt very good about walking away.

Keep that in mind when doing your next sale.

Federal law limits purchases from FFLs to age 21 for handguns.
State law MAY restrict the sale of handguns to those between 18 and 21.
In many states anyone 18 or older can buy from a NON-dealer (private sale).

Perhaps he configured his side of the transaction to be a good deal for you because he knew darn right well what he was doing was illegal.

I think you made the right move.

He may have been legal to buy age-wise, but illegal for other reasons.

I don't do private sales with folks who act hinky.

Great job. You did the right thing. I will never transfer a gun privately if I have any reservations. If the deal seems strange in anyway I will not do it.

Same here but sad for me as a senior citizen I remember days when we
bought/traded guns at work or home with no concerns, times have changed.:(

my how the years have flown

Hey Wingman, I remember sitting in a kitchen in (un-named western state to protect the innocent) and buying a stack of handguns from the disgruntled ex-wife of some poor slob - cash money, no receipts or permits, and none needed... I was flying home next day, so went to the UPS store and sent the two I wanted to myself... Went to a bar that night and sold the ones I didn't want for cash money... Total cost to myself for two outstanding guns was zero...
It was a free country then... Whut in ell happened to it?

Ya did good. It is always better to walk away from a hinky sale and lose out on some $$, than check into the Graybar Hotel for a number of years.

I remember those days, too; they were yesterday. And maybe today. And probably tomorrow, too.

If you mean you sold guns to people who acted shady or suspicious, then no, I don't remember those days. I've always preferred to deal with honest folks. I can't remember when it was morally right to sell a gun to someone who acted like a criminal.

What;?? Come off the mountain into the light, no one said anything as you
stated.
