better S&W..Masterpiece or Outdoorsman?

This comparison, if not apples and oranges, is surely oranges and grapefruits. The Outdoorsman an "N" frame; the Masterpiece a "K" frame. The question would be better posed, "Which do you like better, not which is better. IMO, they are intrinsically equal. The choice should be predicated on the intended use and/or personal wants, needs and preferences of the shooter. Wil Terry offered a pretty sensible solution to the dilemma.

All that said, if pushed I would concede that most Masterpieces have "better" finishes than do the Outdoorsmans.

Good post Hal. Certainly learned something as I had no idea there was a K frame Outdoorsman. If Aspen 1964 was asking opinions on comparisons between two K frame variations then certainly the "match-up" is a lot more appropriate in terms of "apples-to-apples" in my mind.

Besides, everybody knows I'm no expert in these matters... :)

If you are talking strictly about K-frames I would take the Outdoorsman. Very few Outdoorsmans were made before they slightly modified them and renamed them the Masterpiece.

If you mean the N frame .38 Special "Outdoorsman" (Model 23) compared to the Model 14 "Masterpiece" it depends on your intended purpose. For casual shooting I would choose the M14 simply because the N frame is unnecessarily heavy for a .38 Special. For collecting the N frame is more interesting and more valuable and will go up more with time.

If comparing the K38 "Outdoorsman" to the later "Masterpiece" variations then not much to choose. Most collectors prefer the older guns but not much differnce in shooting qualities.

I say get one of each just to be on the safe side. :D
