Best way to sell a gun?

I have a Kahr P380 with a blackened slide that is all of two months old.
I have hit the 200 round break in period and it's working flawlessly.
Never even carried it.

I might want to take my daughter on a trip or even buy a new 9mm or .45
rather than keep the gun.

What is the best way for a private individual to get a fair price on their gun?

Any tips or suggestions are welcome.
Feel free to add info about FFL transfer and if there are certain states I could not ship it to. Although, I think I have read that California's strict laws don't apply to sales between private individuals.

Thanks...

Have you visited the Gun Show section of TFL? I am working on selling one there and have bought some things. You can require it to be local on there and not have to worry about the FFL in many cases (depending on your state).

The best way to sell it is by private sale, you'll get the most money that way. I've sold a couple on some state of Georgia specific outdoors forums that have classified sections, because I prefer a face to face private meet to shipping with all of the costs and hassle involved.

Look and see if your area has a local or statewide outdoors forum.

Well the easiest way is to put it on consignment at an FFL. The most economical way would be to find a private buyer near buy (no shipping, online auction fees, or dealer fees). You could try Gun Broker but I have found that you loose a lot of money doing it. GB takes a small cut but you have to pay for dealer fees and shipping. Also if you make the buyer pay for the fees then they are less willing to pay more for the gun.

IF where you live allows face to face sales, that is the best way. As to value, a look at closed auctions on the various sites like Gun Broker, Auction Arms, Guns America, etc. will give you an idea of actual selling prices. Forums like this can give you an idea of asking prices - the two are not usually the same.

The more intermediaries you can eliminate, the more money in your pocket

You could sell to an individual. I would't take a check, and for Gods sake to sell it to someone, even a friend with the pay you later, I'll take the gun now plan.

I've done that a few times and got no money, nor the gun back.

I used to buy broken guns at pawn shops, fix them, and then sell them on consignment at D J's Loan & Sport Incorporated, Bothell, WA.

That place is very good at coming up with a price for my guns that will make them sell in a month or two. They get 15% commission.

I told my wife that when I die, she can take my guns there.

Posting in any forum's FOR SALE section yields the best price for you. I would however caution you if this is not a face to face deal. Where I live, there is really no such thing. Therefore I do all my sales through my FFL. They send it out to the buyers FFL (they do it just for the cost of shipping) and the buyer can worry about transfer fees. This is after payment has positively cleared. I do the same thing for trades, FFL to FFL. I let them arrange the shipping to each other when both have the items in their possesion. That way the FFL takes responsiblity for the firearm and not the owner. Again we each pay our FFLs for the transfer fees and shipping. Takes a little from the price you have in mind, but the safety and peace of mind this gives me is:

Finding the gun you always wanted for the price you wanted, great!
Having the piece of mind that it is 100% legal, Priceless!

That's not a bad idea. I think I might do that in the future for online sales (have an FFL ship the item I'm selling).
