Best way to keep blue finish in good condition.

On my 1911 Colt Gold Cup National Match
(or any gun with a blue finish),is a light coating of oil on the gun's finish good enough to preserve it?...Or is something better?
Thanks,
Mike

FWIW, I've used Hoppe's Gun Oil applied with a lint-free patch on my GC for years and have never had a speck of rust. I guess the trick is to wipe down the entire gun, leaving no part of the steel without its light coat of oil. I even drip a little oil into the grasping grooves of the slide, the hammer and mainspring housing serrations, etc., then wipe away the excess, leaving a light coat on these surfaces.

There may be other and better ways to go, but this has worked for me. :)

Try a top quality paste wax. I learned that one from my Dad, who was a tool and die maker. Seems to have been a technique in that group for many years

I read an article this past summer in the Gun Tests annual where they did corrosion inhibiter testing for several different kinds of oils.

Breakfree CLP was superior hands down.

One of the minor drawbacks to ownership of classic pre-1970 Colt firearms is the fragility of that beautiful Colt Royal Blue.
If you carry the gun in a holster, or even handle it a lot, it WILL wear off. It's also guaranteed to run, fade and bleed if you use touch-up blue or any 'imaginative' cleaners on it.
My National Match gets a wipedown with a sheepskin pad sprayed with Breakfree CLP when I clean and store it. Next time I take it out, I wipe it dry, because I don't like to handle a greasy-feeling gun.
After handling/shooting, I use a silicon cloth to protect from fingerprints and dampness til I can get it home and clean it again with CLP.
The gun is over thirty years old, but still has all it's blue, though the front and backstraps are beginning to look kinda pale.
Paste wax works on fine gun finishes, too, but be careful not to use any automotive wax that contains abrasive cleaners.

If they take our guns, I intend to let my hair grow long and acquire the jawbone of an ass.

I have had good luck with Birchwood Casey Sheath. I have HEARD that CorrosionX is also good. YMMV.

Frank
