One of the minor drawbacks to ownership of classic pre-1970 Colt firearms is the fragility of that beautiful Colt Royal Blue.
If you carry the gun in a holster, or even handle it a lot, it WILL wear off. It's also guaranteed to run, fade and bleed if you use touch-up blue or any 'imaginative' cleaners on it.
My National Match gets a wipedown with a sheepskin pad sprayed with Breakfree CLP when I clean and store it. Next time I take it out, I wipe it dry, because I don't like to handle a greasy-feeling gun.
After handling/shooting, I use a silicon cloth to protect from fingerprints and dampness til I can get it home and clean it again with CLP.
The gun is over thirty years old, but still has all it's blue, though the front and backstraps are beginning to look kinda pale.
Paste wax works on fine gun finishes, too, but be careful not to use any automotive wax that contains abrasive cleaners.

If they take our guns, I intend to let my hair grow long and acquire the jawbone of an ass.
