Best way to clean the holes in ported barrels?

My "new" Mossy has a ported barrel. When I got it (used) the ports were almost clogged shut with hard gray crud. I tried a variety of methods to clean them out and finally got the job done but it was a real PITA. I figured it must have been neglected for some time to get that bad but after just 125rds. they were clogged enough that they weren`t round anymore. Any tips? Marcus

I would suggest using pipe cleaners - unless you've already tried it. That "hard gray crud" is probably a mixture of carbon, unburned powder and shot cup plastic. Try soaking the end of the barrel (up passed the ports) overnight in a shotgun bore cleaner that strips out the plastic to see if that helps. Also using a fine wire (like comes in a twist tie) to ream out the holes. Hope this helps.

This is another reason I do not have any guns with ported barrels or "compensators" of any kind :D

Sounds to me like the inside of the porting holes aren't as clean, machining-wise, as it should be. I have thousands of rounds thru my Browing O/U and have never had to be concerned about cleaning the ports.
Maybe have a smith look it over with a borescope to see if there are some sharp edges or something.
At anyrate, I would thong a pipe cleaner and shooter's choice should clean it up just right.
