best trigger for 10/22

I gave myself a Christmas present and bought an International style Ruger 10/22. I'd always wanted something in that style, and I also needed a .22 I could scope, since my old .22 (inherited from my father) is not scope ready.

But the trigger is really rough and heavy. What's the best aftermarket trigger, and where do I get it? I would prefer one I could install myself. I'm no gunsmith, though I can do simple tasks given clear instructions.

A search here at TFL tells me that many like the Vollquartsen trigger without telling me how hard it is to install, how much it costs, or where to get it. Are there any other good triggers? Cabela's has one they advertise as lowering the trigger to about 2 pounds. Any experience with it?

You may be talking about the Volquartsen Triggergaurd 2000, a modular drop in replacement for the entire stock unit. I checked one out on a friend's 10-22, very slick and a whisper of a crisp pull.

Drawback: Cost around $150-180.

Since I couldn't stomach that price tag on a $120 weapon, I went with plan B, a Volq Target Hammer, about $30 from any number of sources, Brownells included.

It really improved the pull, took out a lot of the creep and significantly lightened the pull.

It came with NO instructions, but I pulled and printed the parts diagram from Rimfirecentral.com and managed to get it in place and all together.

Be careful to note where everything is before you start pushing out the pins, but as far as I can tell, it won't go back together wrong.

Also, there's a wierd shaped bar that engages the hammer, the part that touches the hammer is like an arrohead with a circle stuck on the tip. Polish the sharp edges on this punched metal part and this is supposed to help as well. I used a dremel with a stone, then a polishing wheel and some rouge.

Oh, the "extra" tiny spring is a replacement for the spring that goes on the pin behind the hammer in that hole in the triggergaurd, at least I hope that's what it is!

Middle of the road between thses options is a Volq action kit with more replacement parts than just the hammer, but it gets pretty expensive this way, note that the price approaches the whole TG2000 option.

Other common and cheap mods include an extended mag release, an automatic bolt release, and buffers to ease recoil's toll on the aluminum receiver.

Let me know if you need more info, I just did this mod about a week ago.

The Kidd Innovative Design (KID) trigger is very nice, two stage, you can get three different flavors. I also have the ultra match with lightest first stage and second stage. It comes with an extended mag release and also releases the bolt by pulling the cocking handle backward. I believe that soime of the pull weight is adjustable, but I have not tried this. Tony Kidd is quite pleasant.

It costs $278. But you get what you pay for.

I bought the Volquartsen HP Action kit. I think it's basically the same upgraded parts that come in the TriggerGuard 2000, but you install the Volq parts in your stock Ruger trigger guard assembly (and save about 90 bucks in the process).

The kit comes with a match trigger, sear, hammer, and some other parts. I was nervous at first about taking the whole trigger assembly apart, because I've never done anything beyond field stripping and cleaning my 10/22 before. It was surprisingly easy, just follow the instructions and keep the parts organized so you don't lose anything or forget to re-install anything. It's the sort of thing that you do once, then you could do it again quickly and without any instructions.

The trigger is SO much lighter, with a quick reset and a very smooth pull. It took me a bit to get used to my 10/22 trigger breaking so quickly and smoothly, I was caught by surprise several times. I definitely recommend the kit, you can install it yourself pretty easily and it makes a huge difference.

I bought the kit from On Target (www.ontargetguns.com).

If you are on a tight budget like me, then a Volquartsen target hammer is the way to go. It is not as good as a full blown trigger package, but is 1000% better than the stock set up.

The modified bolt hold open is a nice feature as well. You can buy one, or if you want, I can shoot you an email of a pic of how to modify your own.-I would give you the website, but I frankly forgot where I snaked it from.
