Best Snubby For Carry -- S&W 342PD

Its a ten ounce scandium revolver that fits in your pocket and you dont even know its there.

Yup it kicks like a Las Vegas showgirl, but stoked with Cor-bon or Gold Dot 38 +P's its the gun to carry in hot weather when my Kimber Pro and Glocks are resting in the safe. And its hot here most of the year!!!!

In a Kramer horsehide pocket holster its ready to go. Of course its a "pre-internal lock" model.

I shoot several snubbies and big revolvers and pistols so the recoil can be managed for practice shooting. I had two of them but gave one to my boy for his birthday.

At $600 its a little pricey but its state of the art engineering and I'm worth
it!!!!

Any other Scandium fans????? :D :D :D :D

It's a nice little gun, but there are three things I dislike about it...its tendency to shake the bullets loose with certain loads and bullet weights, its excessive recoil with magnums (to put it mildly), and the hefty price tag.

My snub of choice is the 642. Sure, it's "only" a .38+P gun with an alloy frame, but it's light enough for pocket carry while being heavy enough to not have reliability issues with certain loads, and just heavy enough to not be be brutal on the hand when running a box of shells through it.

Still, the Scandium snubs are impressive pieces of engineering. If I had one, I'd load it exclusively with .38+P loads, so I'd waste the extra money I'd have to spend over a 642.

Gunman! I am I fan. I picked-up a 342pd last week...already went to the range and was quite pleased with my groups out to 25 yards. Everytime I handle this remarkable revolver, I just can't believe...it is what it is!

Carried a 342 for 2+ years before selling to use money for 340. Lots of dry fire, a little trigger work and range time gave it the best double action trigger of any Smith I've owned. I've still not been able to get same smoothness (altho close) out of 340.

Older lady who bought my 342 calls it "The Baby" - and declines to sell it back to me, despite having left the range after first 2-box session with a bloody hand.

I have the 340PD but only shoot 38+p's out of it. And i love the gun also. so light that you never know that it is even there. shooting 38 +p's is not bad at all and very controllable

Don't have one but I want one. Glad you like yours...makes me want one even more. The 640 does get a bit heavy in my pocket sometimes...but I have never forgotten I had it either... :)

I think Marko is referring to the 340.

342 is, IMO, perfect. The .357 is too much for more than one shot in this size and weight platform.

The 342 is not, however, very cost efficient. The 642 is only marginally heavier and a whole lot less expensive.

This is presumably why you can still buy a 442 and a 642, and get .38 Special chambering in lightweight and reasonably priced revolvers, or you can buy a 340 and get .357 Magnum chambering in an ultralightweight but very expensive revolver, but you cannot any longer buy a 342 and get .38 Special chambering in an ultralightweight, very expensive revolver...however, I have one that has been my BUG since they were introduced, 15x7x365 (366 in leap years), and though it looks like it's been around the block a few times and has had a few real life droptests performed, it's still a fabulous revolver.

I carried a nickel 442 fo 7-8 years every day as Back up while on duty on primary while off duty. I traded into a 342 titanium .38 and think it is perfect. It's carried a lot and shot a little. I've had 2 scandium .357's and got rid of both. Partly because they just hurt so much and partly because they had the lock, which I find useless and fugly.
