what slug would be the best for black bear? i was thinking about using the fushion slug. i have heard good things about them and they arent as expensive as other premium slugs.
Are you talking about large, or small black bear? Small, I'd say any of the brennekke style, or even foster style are adequate in 3" shells. Those loads are more than equal to a 45-70, in many aspects.
Test the ones you like for accuracy off a bench, in the gun you will use to hunt.
I have found great variations in accuracy between different slug loads, and have used 2 3/4" slugs rather than 3" due to accuracy. That was a long time ago (smooth bore / rifle sights) and I'm sure things have improved, but those big 'ol foster slugs sure punch a mean hole.
For protection or for hunting? Federal Powershok 1600 fps 3" rifled slugs. Thats my BB defensive load of choice. Those do some serious damage. . . on both ends. They seem to travel fairly far too for a slug. Honestly though something like this seems the best way to go. A slug and buckshot combo. The best of both worlds. http://www.cabelas.com/fryprod-0/pr...Personal-Defense-Shotshells--706600.uts.shtml for protection that is. For hunting i'm not too sure. I've only had to use my shotgun when the bear was hunting me.
as for small or big bears, i plan to hunt njs bear hunt this year, which has only had 2 bear hunting seasons since 1970, so there might be an opportunity for a larger bear, i was kind of leary about using an full lead slug for penetration purposes.
