Ok guys...lets get some discussion going. In your opinion..what is the best 5.56 assault/battle rifle ever built or imported to the US? The criteria's are...looks...reliability....accuracy....ease of maintenance.. money has nothing to do with it. Let's hear your voices.

Most of the major brands, Colt, S&W, Rock River etc are all good. The H&K at around $3,000 is maybe or maybe not worth the money compaired to a Colt, but you pay your money and you make your choice.

As far as I know, the only 5.56mm assault/battle rifles built in or imported into the U.S. have been the M-16 series and variants, including the M-4. Colt has built the majority, followed by FN, with a very few by HK, some other very small numbers.

If you are referring to AR-15-style rifles and "M4orgeries" it is a different kettle of fish. But these are not assault or battle rifles.

I think the SCAR, ACR, SA80...Are included too. All these have been imported or made in the US. The FS2000, the steyr...dunno if I spelled that right either, the AUG...and AR series.

What about 5.7mm? You can get an AR upper for that and it would include the P90... And the 5.45 would include the AK74...Oh, and that XM series that never got fielded, but was developed as a battle rifle.

I am not saying these are the best, but prior to the ban, you could buy a Steyr AUG in 5.56, a version of the Isreali Galil in 5.56, a version of the HK G3 in 5.56, and a version of the FN FAL in 5.56.

The Galil is probably the most durable ultra-reliable 5.56 rifle ever made, being based on the Ak-47 (as improved by the Finns).

The Steyr AUG is certainly the coolest looking (or perhaps just the wierdest looking) battle rifle.

In the 1980's, The FN FAL varient scored the most points with the SOF-snobs (the mall ninjas of the day)... The SOF (as in soldier of fortune magazine) snobs held forth the opinion that the only real battle rifle was an FN FAL (in 7.62 of course).... But if you had one in 5.56, they would at least let you into the room.

All of these weapons were imported, were legal, and are legal today if you can find one. So the original question was
what is the best 5.56 assault/battle rifle ever built or imported to the US

so these fine weapons have to be on the consideration list.

started collecting these in the late 70's....the good ole days...havent had the pleasure of shooting 550 sigs...but have had everything else. I still like the HK 93 for me. I assume 550..551 Sigs are maybe nicer...who knows...HK 93 is pure sexy..shoots great too...pain in the a$$ to clean though.

I just got it, certainly NOT going to say it's the best by any means, but it's the best one I have. ;) Having a lot of fun finding out just how good it is...

SA vz-58 5.56mm from CzechpointUSA.

Mine is the best. RRA with a Magpul stock and 2 stage trigger. Is guaranteed to be sub moa. Originally comes with A2 stock all for under $1200. I have shot several brands of ammo including steel cartridges from Hornady without a hitch. Have purposely not cleaned it after several hundred rounds and still not a single malfunction. Just love it. It is a tack driver and can shoot the manly parts of a flea at 200 yds. (Last statement might be pushing it.)

Close to 'the best' would be the Steyr AUG A3. It is the most 'fun' among the bests :D

But if you're really after 'the best', then my vote goes to the SIG 550

5.56 is just a high powered .22, nothing more. Uncle Sam gave me a 7.62 while in VN that used up 500 round ammo cans real quick...it was a M-60, a piston operated machine gun. Tracers at night coming out of the barrel are a beautiful sight! :D
