Best S&W Auto?

I don't like any of the 3rd Generation or Sigma semi-autos. I've owned one before and it was a jam-o-matic with a terrible trigger. The ones I rented were not much better (they all had the bad trigger--even the reliable ones).

I have a model 410 which is chambered for the 40 S&W. This gun has been very accurate and reliable with any ammo put thru it.

The trigger on this paticular gun is one of the best I've seen in either the SA or the DA mode. I highly recommend this model.

I also have several other 40 S&W handguns from various makers with which to compare. None of them has anything over the model 410 in my opinion.

After a trigger job I have been very pleased with my CS45. I paid $325 for it new and it came in a plastic box and has three magazines. My CS45 is accurate and reliable. I can't ask for more. Regards, Richard

Well, if you've got the money, the S&W 952 (which is an updated, 9mm versions of the superb Model 52) might fill the bill.

The 945 ain't bad, either.

Of the S&W autos I have owned, the best are the Models 639, 645, and 3913. Of these, my favorite is probably the 639. But IMO they are all high-quality guns.

I only own one S&W auto and my 945 5" is one of the best guns I own. It is a bit costly, but well worth the money.

I've never been a big fan of S&W semi-autos.

I've always found them to be ergonomically challenged and overpriced.

But, I do like the 4506 full size, it fits my hand well, and the 3913.

blades67 - You should have waited for the 4516-2 :D Mine rivals my P220 for accuracy, weighs more (kicks less) and fits my hand better. I'm hard-put to decide between them.

I bought a 4506 as my first center-fire semi-auto. I (thought I) wanted a da/sa pistol. I made, for me, what turned out to be a poor choice. I never managed to get the hang of the trigger. The first shot went OK, but the pull on succeeding shots threw me off.

Accuracy was acceptable, but only that. It had the adjustable rear sight, and it liked to move around when bumped. I'd have to remember to push it to the left, against the screw, before stepping up to the line at league shoots.

Reliability was awesome! The example I had would feed, shoot, and extract anything I could find. Even when the pistol was disgustingly filthy, it ran fine.

The 4506 is a heavy brute! And, unless you're used to a Glock, it's fat. You can't compare it to a 1911, with regard to size and weight. My Kimber outshines it in ergonomics, size, weight, comfort, accuracy, and looks. The 4506 had a trigger best described as this: It's hard, it's long, and it's hard for a long time. I forget where I heard that , but it fits the 4506, whether DA or SA.

Others here have spoken in the past (unfavorably) about the slide-mounted safety. I poo-poo'ed their opinions. Until I used it, that is. I *really* like the 1911 safety. Generally, I carried it in condition 2 - chambered; hammer down. No need for a safety, except to de-cock, then back to "Fire" position. I think the magazine disconnect feature went away on mine, too. Who wants a pistol that can't be fired just because the mag is out?

Field stripping is simple - no tools needed. Watch that recoil spring, though. I had to repair the sheetrock once when it got away from me, launching the guide rod into the wall. Wear safety glasses when disassembling! Really.

I still, sometimes, lust after a 3913 for a small carry gun. Maybe Mrs. B. would like one...
