Whereas the .357 rd will work just fine in the GP, I'd prefer to use a +P .38 spl. 158 due to recoil management vis a vis second shot. YMMV

I'd think there would be very little impact on the safety or function of the pistol, so if it's for hunting (probably not gonna be a 3") go for it. If it's self defense, maybe drop down to the hot .38 loads.

But whaddaIknow? :)

I wish I could fine a 3 inch GP100 in my neck of the woods. I'd buy it in a minute.

The 158gr hollowpoint should do fine. 125 gr. hollowpoints are also good. The GP100 isn't exactly an airweight so I would worry about recoil too much with the magnums.

My ruger (sp101) seems to favor the heavier bullets, 140gr and up. I can cloverleaf a target at 25feet with 158gr, but it opens up to about 1.5"-2" with 110gr bullets. I also have a 3" barrel.

YMMV

I've carried Federal or Winchester 125 grain JHPS for many years but switched to heavier bullets. The 125-grain loadings seem to be more controllable for rapid DA work. If you're in a rural area where you might encounter injured or dangerous animals, the 158-grain bullets could prove to be the best choice. The 125-grainers don't seem to penetrate as well. I've had trouble putting down larger animals: deer, cattle and a well-muscled-up pit bull. The 140-grain bullets and the 145-grain Winchester Silvertip are good compromises. I was using Silvertips when I last carried a .357 in law enforcement--switched after the pit bull decided to not die right away.

Those Hornady TAP loads look interesting. I might try those out.

3" .357 Load

I also am a believer in the 145 Gr Winchester Silver Tip for my 3" Model 66 S&W. It has been my carry load for many years, and the 66 handles them well. The GP100 is a little heavier and should handle them even better. I personally would never recommend dropping down to .38 Spl, even the +P loads for CCW purposes.

The nice thing about the GP100 is that any .357 round is a good round. I have shot 110 grn WWB JHP all the way to 180 grn Bonded core bullets out of my GP's with nary a hitch.

The fixed sighted 3" will print high the heavier the bullet weights goes up. So, adjust your aiming when you switch ammo, or bullet weights.

Remington used to make good ammunition.
Lord only knows what they make now since they are real close mouthed about details on their web site.

A round I've found to be good in my .357's is the Cor Bon 125 grain .38spl +P.

It delivers near magnum velocity with way less noise and flash.

History 101

History suggests (some say "proves") that the best blow from any-length 357 is a maximum 125g JHP; Federal.

I have two GP's......
