I love the 44mag. It's a great cartridge.
I would like to get a 44mag rifle, but I want a big bore rifle with a bit more ZING to it... more along the lines of 454casull or 45-70.
I've heard of the 445 supermag pistol that Dan Wesson puts out, and this sounds like the right cartridge for what I want... a 300gr bullet around 1800-2200 fps out of a rifle is what I am looking for, and if I can get away from buying new dies that would make me quite happy. Also, if I can use my plinking 240gr LSWC bullets in both my handgun loads and my rifle loads, that would make me even happier.
Can a rifle barrel's chamber be reamed out to accomodate the 445 supermag if it was originally chambered for 44mag? What rifle would be the "best" candidate for such an operation? I favor lever guns and I am left handed, and I would suspect that a marlin or winchester would be best. I'd prefer to have a magazine of some sort, so I'd prefer to stay away from the H&R single shot rifles.
Would a lever gun have feed issues with the extra cartridge length? Are there any bolt action 44mag rifles out there (lefty or righty)? Anyone here successfully done this?
