best polymer .45 ACP for lefties?

Hi,

As a lefty shooter, I am considering my first .45 ACP polymer pistol. May I get some recommendations for lefty friendly shooters?

Thanks!

I would think the gen 5 Glock .45s are arriving soon. They’ll add a right sided slide lock/release.

The Gen 4 glocks have a magazine release that can be swapped to the Right side. This takes care of almost all issues a Leftie has with a Glock.

That leaves the slide release lever. Most solve this issue when doing a Slide Lock Reload by just doing a Reach Over and pull the slide back to release the slide.
I would not hold my breath waiting on the ambi slide release lever on a 45. It will probably come, but that could be down the road.

SLIDE LOCK RELOAD
ONE: Slam in a Magazine
TWO: Reach Over to grab the back of the slide and pull it back a Hair to Release
THREE: Release the slide when it stops moving back and Let the Slide slam forward chambering a round
FOUR: Reacquiring the grip with your support hand

The Right side magazine release button is really the only thing you need on a Glock. With a Gen4 it can be swapped to Right Side Operation in a matter of minutes without a Gunsmith. You Tube is your Friend here. :)

Be sure and check out the SF Glock Models. They should have a more manageable grip size, unless you have big hands.

If the G21SF grip is still too big for you, you have one more option with a Glock. Check out a Gen 4 G37. You can relocate the Magazine Button to the Right Side, and it has a G19/23/32 Grip size, making it very shootable. It is chambered in 45GAP which is not a big problem if you order your ammo.

As a lefty myself, I have had little problem learning to deal with the minor inconveniences of dealing with righty- friendly handguns.

For instance:
1. I prefer guns with no manual thumb safety, so ambidexterity is a non-issue.
2. If the magazine release button is ambidextrous or reversible, fine. But, if not, I release the magazine with the middle finger of my left-hand.
3. I exclusively use the overhand slingshot method for releasing the slide to chamber around.

Having said that, for polymer handguns in 45ACP that are completely lefty-friendly with ambidextrous or reversible magazine buttons and slide release levers, look to HK (e.g.- HK45) and Sig (e.g.- P320) for now. A Glock gen 5 in 45ACP is not yet available, but I'd guess, will be around shortly.

"Real" lefties leave the mag button on the left, where it's very handy to the trigger finger, rather than moving it to the other side where it's a long reach for the thumb.

XDS in a small gun. Ambi mag release, no manual safety.

(I find the regular XD in 45 to have a really big grip. YMMV.)

Another lefty here!

FNX 45. Ambidextrous and shoots like a dream. 15 +1

Also have a Michigan kydex holster that coincidentally fits an FNS 40 S&W and a FNX 40 S&W and also a Glock 27. Has been a very good holster but took a long while to get it in 2014ish.

Im a lefty. Other than ambi safties, i dont have any need for a lefty friendly set up. You usually can easily work most right handed releases with your left handed index finger and I prefer no safeties on a carry gun.

That said M&P, Sig and Walther either have reversible mad switches or ambi set up like the PPS.

If I am not mistaken, the Ruger SR45 is ambi. The manual safety and mag release are located on both sides. Only the slide release is one-sided (on the left.)

I am right handed, but I try to get ambi pistols, since I train with both hands just for flexibility. That is my first choice in .45's .

I know that the FN - FNS 9 is similar, but don't know if they make a .45 model.

I just checked the FN site. It looks like the FNX-45 is Ambi - decocker/safety, mag release and slide release are on both sides. This is DA/SA model, with hammer. I did not see a striker fired version (like the FNS.)

Weblance,

Its for just fun range use. I am in NJ, so concealed carry is NOT gonna happen!

Ok that makes a BIG difference. I really like my FNX-45. Its completely ambidextrous. Its a great pistol

my Favorite is my Hk45. The mag release and the slide release are ambi from the factory and the ambidextrous decocker/ safety kit is around $35 online. Plus the ability to change the gun from decock only to decock plus safety by changing the detent plate ( $10 part and 10 minutes) makes the gun a winner for me.

Agreed. Works for me.
