Best places to buy revolvers

I've never bought a gun online. It seems to me that the added cost of FFL transfer and shipping charges would negate any price advantage.

I have bought from my dealers. My latest purchase, the .44 Uberti, was brand new and ordered by my gun shop. I bought during a time when they paid the sales tax, which amounted to a savings of approximately $45.00. As to buying used guns, I have the option of examining the gun before purchase, no charges involved.

"Best" depends on your own subjective preferences.

I happen to like 60s through early 80s era S&W revolvers which means I am usually buying used. I don't have time to drive around to a lot of gun stores looking to see what they might happen to have in stock, and they usually overprice them anyway.

I've bought all of my recent revolvers online. The cost of shipping and FFL fees are usually made up for by the avoidance of sales tax. The only issue is that you need to be careful who you are ordering from so that you can trust their description and photos.

I'm not against buying from local stores but it would sure help if they'd keep an up-to-date inventory with pics and pricing on-line. Some may, but those in my area don't. Couple of them don't seem to be aware of what the Internet is.

I prefer to buy new from dealers, but that is not always feasible unless I am willing to wait.. and wait... Case in point, when I wanted to buy a P-01, my LGS could not get one. The three distributors they use were out of stock, and did not know when they could get one. So, I bought a NIB gun from a custom shop, that I had tune the gun while they were at it.

In most other cases, I have been able to get my LGS to order new guns for me.

I look at online purchasing not as a cost-saving thing, but as a way to find guns I can't get from the LGS. I have bought several Pre-Lock S&W revolvers, traded for a Colt 1917, and most recently acquired a 1940s Colt 1911 and 1950s Savage 99 via online sources.

When I do look online for reevolvers, I typically check gunbroker.com, jgsales.com, aimsurplus.com, gunsamerica.com, and armslist.com

To each his own, but that is one of my favorite pastimes is visiting the shops and pawn shops. Some need a pot-bellied stove and sand box for tobacco juice! And, found some bargains there. Bought a Model 29 for $225 from a guy going into one of these strores.

Judging by the experiences I've had I would say you can usually find better deals for used guns in shops and new guns online. This of course could be different in different parts of the country.

If you are new to buying guns then I would get a knowledgable friend and go to a physical store.

Whichever you can get the best price with.

I have bought guns online and in local stores. Generally, online purchasing requires mpre setup IMO.

For online purchasing, you need to do your homework and research how much it would cost to buy the gun online, do they charge extra for using a credit card, how much is shipping, do you have an FFL dealer to recieve the gun, how much does your FFL charge for the transfer, is there an FFL dealer in town that does it for less and you need to inspect the gun before accepting it.

For shopping at the local stores, you need to get an idea as to how much the revolver costs by shopping around, ask politely if they can knock a few bucks off (haggle), play with it or others they have to compare in person and just worry about sales tax.

Agree with this 100%

Places like Buds have free shipping. $25 for an FFL fee. No tax where I am. If you factor in tax once you get over about $300 you can start saving with online purchase.

The last 5 of the last 7 guns I bought have been quite a bit cheaper online than anywhere locally

Same here, most of my revolvers came from a pawn shop. Just do the March checklist and be prepared to negotiate and you can get some sweet deals at a pawn shop. You can get skinned as well, it's entirely up to you. Do your homework.

Got a nice Model 19-4 last January in good to very good condition for $325 OTD.

Now that I look back over it, all of my revolvers were bought in stores or pawn shops. Most of my recent semis online.

Some of that has to do with I buy more used revolvers than new and I buy more new semis than uses

Just for information, I live in Memphis, Tennessee. My two favorite stores are Guns And Ammo, and right across the street is Accent Pawn shop. Guns And Ammo probably sells more guns than all of the other gun shops in Shelby County combined, and always has an interesting inventory of used guns as well.

The pawn shop across the street has split into two different buildings, one for guns, the other for other pawn shop business. Seen recently was a Colt M1902 .38 ACP, and a nickel plated S&W M1917, among others.

They also carry street pistols as well.

Hello Bob,,,

It seems to me that the added cost of FFL transfer and shipping charges would negate any price advantage.

Many on-line gun stores such as budsgunshop.com offer free shipping,,,
The Evil Pawn Shop Guy only charges $20.00 for a transfer fee,,,
In this case the extra $20.00 buys me a better selection.

I always ask the Evil Pawn Shop Guy if he can match Buds price,,,
If he can he has gladly done so for me in the past,,,
If he can't he's glad to make an easy $20.00.

Bob, I live in Olive Branch so I am a MS resident. Guns and Ammo has a location in Southaven. They do not have as big of a used selection as the Memphis store but they have the largest new gun selection I have seen in MS. Prices are average but the staff is friendly. I do buy a lot of cast lead there for reloading. I know you are a TN resident but if you want to window shop, Dabbs pawn in Southaven and Weasels pawn in Nesbit usually have some interesting revolvers. Weasels does not have a big selection but 3 screw Ruger SA are common there.

I did buy a "old model" Vaquero in 45 colt from the gun shop in Memphis on Germantown parkway (behind Corky's) they have an agreement with The Gun Exchange in Olive Branch and will send it there for $25. If you ever saw something in The Gun Exchange I am sure they will ship to Memphis for $25. The Gun Exchange has a decent used inventory. I picked up a Ruger Redhawk in 45 colt there a few weeks back for $500 OTD
