Best Place to buy a hand gun in NC also a question on VA and WV

Hi all. Will be traveling from Wilmington NC to near Clarksburg WV soon. I may checkout a place or two if they are good and near the highway. Here is my route I40 to Winston Salem then up 77 and 81 (I think) through Wytheville Va. Then to US 19 near Beckly to catch 79 North of Summersville WV. Any good shops with huge selection and good prices on the way?

Also, If my NC CCW will not allow me to buy out of state in VA or WVA then that part of the route is mute, but I don't know that yet. I can buy with it anywhere in NC. Thanks.

You can buy a handgun from an out-of-state dealer... BUT... it will have to be sent to a dealer in the state where you live, and transferred to you via that dealer. Having a concealed carry permit makes no difference to this. Shipping costs and transfer fees aren't trivial, and if you buy it in person, you'll pay the state sales tax, if any -- so it would have to be a very good buy to be worthwhile.

From the ATF website:
Q: From whom may an unlicensed person acquire a firearm under the GCA?

A person may only acquire a firearm within the person’s own State, except that he or she may purchase or otherwise acquire a rifle or shotgun, in person, at a licensee’s premises in any State, provided the sale complies with State laws applicable in the State of sale and the State where the purchaser resides. A person may borrow or rent a firearm in any State for temporary use for lawful sporting purposes.
[18 U.S.C. 922(a)(3) and (5), 922(b)(3), 27 CFR 478.29 and 478.30]

Q: May an unlicensed person obtain a firearm from an out-of-State source if the person arranges to obtain the firearm through a licensed dealer in the purchaser’s own State?

A person not licensed under the GCA and not prohibited from acquiring firearms may purchase a firearm from an out-of-State source and obtain the firearm if an arrangement is made with a licensed dealer in the purchaser’s State of residence for the purchaser to obtain the firearm from the dealer.
[18 U.S.C. 922(a)(3) and 922(b)(3)]
Note that "unlicensed," in this context, means "not a licensed firearms dealer." It has nothing to do with having a license to carry.

There is nothing in the Beckley to Summersville area that has what I would call a large selection at fair or reasonable prices.

There is a large shop in Beckley known as Flat Top Arms but they are way over priced. I have never seen anything in there not at MSRP for new and inflated by 15% to 20% for used.

There is a small shop that is off the beaten path where I do transfers but he is not close to the highway and does not stock a ton of stuff. Good prices for stuff he orders and transfers but not really a browsing shop yet.

As for being able to buy you would IIRC be able to buy a shotgun but no pistols. Any handgun bought outside your state needs to be transfered to you in NC.

Morris Firearms/The Shooters Lodge is just off of HWY 421 about 10-15 miles before you get to I-77N. When you get into Winston Salem, instead of staying on I-40W, get off on 421. It runs parallel to 40 and will take you back to I-77. Just google it for directions.

Not a HUGE selection, but the best prices I have seen in Northwestern NC. They are big into Glocks, XDs, and 1911's. They have a few S&W and Ruger revolvers and a few M14's.

Also, if you want to go a little further on HWY 421, there's Duncan Pawn and Gun in North Wilkesboro. Larger selection than Morris and comparable in price.

Good Luck!

i live in Beckley

the shop WVSig was talking about is Shooter's Roost

cool guy that owns it, he's got the best prices in town, but like WVSig said, he doesn't have a huge inventory

www.shootersroost.com is his website

again, like WVSig said, Flat Top Arms is a fairly big shop, but pricing is ridiculous

told me that the least they'd be able to get me a Glock 30 for was going to be $675, but probably closer to $700, and that would be the best price i'd find anywhere for one

i have a friend that frequents Dove's Guns in Princeton, WV and says that he's got good pricing, i've never been there, but i've heard from other unrelated people that he's high as well

there's a few pawn shops in town that have some decent prices, but again, nothing really worth making a trip through town for

I don't know if you'll be near Powell, NC. If you are stop in and check out OBX Ammunition. I haven't been to the shop, but I have dealt with them at the Raleigh gun show. The selection of guns, ammo, and accessories was better than good. His prices were also the best at the show for new stuff. ($329.99 for a S&W Body Guard .380)

I bought some ammo last time I saw him at the show. I did it because the price was gun and he has always been a delight to talk to. He is always respectful and polite.

I forget his name, but is the same white haired gentleman every time.
