Best Pistol using 357 SIG Caliber

So here's the list. This may be tricky since some of these pistols aren't out yet, but will be shortly.

The quality of the company and its service is of importance too.

The gun needs to be able to handle up to 9,000 rounds per year.

Beretta Cougar 8357
Steyr M357
Taurus auto
SIG P229
SIGpro
Glock 31, 32, & 33
HK USP compact

Unfortunately, some of the newer pistols, like the P99 don't support the 357 SIG. So I'm not interested in those pistols at all. Why? Because from my testing, I can make rounds that are amazingly accurate from the mild 9mm Luger standard level all the way up to full power magnum loads.

SIG P229 would be a good one. Even better, IMO, is the 226, unless you don't want a bigger gun. Remember, the new 226 slide is machined from a solid bar of stainless steel so durability is at least the same as the 229.

Why did you leave the 226 off the list?

Was the Sig 226 purposefully or inadvertently left off your list? I have both the 226 and 229 in .357 Sig, and much prefer the 226 even tho it's larger. Also have a Sigpro, and I would rate them 226>pro>229. I have a Cougar in .45, and all of the Sigs beat it hands down for trigger feel and accuracy. Can't comment on the others.

HIGHLY RECOMMEND you get a pistol designed specifically for it.
Then buy the one you like best; they're all good.

I left the P226 off the list because I forgot it. But I was also looking for something around 7" by 5" :)

I'm guessing the SIGpro will last a lot longer thann its distant aluminum cousins. Comments? Remember, I'll be shooting around 9,000 rounds through it a year.

thanks

Pete, anyone who can find time and funds to shoot 9k rd/yr can figure out how to buy a new pistol at the end of the year!

I've only shot the Sig P229 so that's what I'd have to go with. Didn't know they changed the slide on the 226 or that it came in .357sig. Since the 226 is heavier with a longer barrel it might be a bit more accurate. Never met a Sig I didn't like.

I *just* got back from the range shooting my friend's Sig P-229 in .357 SIG. I LOVE that gun! I have a P-229 in .40 and I love it, too.

You can't go wrong with the Sig!

The Sig 2340 with Sig .357 drop-in barrel is excellent. After bad experience with Steyr M40 and M9, I'll pass on .357Sig version of same. Pity, the gun had good ergonomics. I think the real sleeper will be the HS Arms HS2000 when it becomes available in .357Sig. My 9mm version is an accurate, reliable, and extraordinarily well made "plastic" pistol. Its ergonomics are superb and chamber loaded indicator and cocking status indicator are useful features. The HK USP in .357Sig looks and feels good but I have no experience with it. The "key" locking feature of HK's and Steyrs is, in my opinion,a "dubious "improvement. I have seen examples of both that disabled both pistols when the "unlock" failed!

What can I say, I am Glock. G23 with a KKM barrel is more accurate than my G31. I live in the country and shoot 3-4 times a week. I think I will have close to 9000 through my G31 by years end. Reloading 1000rds every 3 weeks right now plus the factory I use for brass.

I'm with you on the .357sig. I have loads that are less than 9mm in recoil and some that have been close to insane. They both print the same in the target, no sight changes required.

Keep us posted on your work. It's kinda lonely in .357sig land....

Actually, since I reload 357 SIG, I buy in bulk. 9mm bullets are really cheap, even good plated ones. It averages out to $66 per month :) But you have a good point :)

So here's the tally so far:

The new updated Steyr M40 works great. But the M357 has just been pushed out another two months to Nov or so :(

USP only supports 357 SIG in compact form. That bothers me for some reason. Same with Beretta.

That just leaves SIG or Glock. It might come down to which gun holds up best and which kind of trigger I like best.

The SIG 226 or sigpro look interesting. According to the specs, the 226 is just 3/10" longer and 3 oz heavier than the sigpro. Yet, the 226 has a a barrel 1/2" longer and a sight radius 4/10" longer.

I'm trying to figure out why the sigpro might be better. Possibly it's more durable which is important, and it is less expensive?

The Glock 31 is only about 1/10" longer than the sigpro yet it has a 4.5" barrel and is also quite cost effective. But with all the new gun legislation being forced on us piece meal, the Glock may have a hard time since it doesn't have a decocker or manual safety.

Whaddaya mean, "when"? AAA Gun And Pawn in De Land, FL has an HS 2000 in .357 SIG in the display case on the left as you enter, with a price tags of about $400 (IIRC) on it.

I agree it looks like an interesting gun -- a cross between a Glock and a SIG, which makes it either a Glig or a Sock. :)

David Scott says: HS2000 in .357 Sig seen in Deland, FL shop.

HSArms importer says "impossible", .357 Sig version not due until early 2001. Better double check. Are you sure it was the Croatian HS2000 that you saw? Craig, at HSArms/INTRAC is most interested to know.
