Best no-frills 1911?

Hey, what does everyone recommend as an affordable, no-frills, full-sized 1911? I'm not really interested in night sights, polished feed ramps, ambi safetys, etc. Just a classic black .45 that I can throw on some white grips. I've got a Colt 1991 Compact, but the finish is a constant problem with powder rust. This time, I'll probably go blued. Thanks.

The best "no frills" 1911A1, that I am aware of, is the Springfield Armory Mil-Spec. This can be had NIB for considerably less than $500 ($425 at a buddie's place) and is identical to what was used in the wars.

This is also a great starter 1911 because you can get used to it at a great price and then add on the features you would like. A beavertail safety is definitely a plus, as are tritium nightsights.

I'll make it unanimous.. It's what I started out with but you wouldn't be able to tell it now.. IMHO if your new to 1911's it's best to start out with a mil-spec and then add the features (bells and whistles)later..

My slightly enhanced SA mil-spec was nearly perfect out of the box. Function was perfect, the sights were just off a little.

What they said, Springfield is the one.

DGFM Sistema.
This pistol was made in Argentina by DGFM for the Argentine Army. Apparently Argentina bought tooling from Colt in the '50s to produce model 1927 (1911A1) pistols under license, but broke the contract and made them without paying Colt. Anyway, this is a really neat pistol...basically it's a government model 1911A1 with a $250 price tag

Suggest the lowest-priced Kimber will provide the highest owner satisfaction.

Worth the few extra dollars.

BB, your history is bit off. Argentina contracted with Colt for the origional models produced by Colt around 1927 (essentially a 1911A1 clone). Later, Colt set up production in Argentina under the authority of the Argentine government and produced the pistol on Colt tooling under Colt supservision. After that agreement ended, the facts get a little jumbled. The 1927 is the 1911A1 and will accept all Colt parts. They are sweet pistols when you can find them. Now BB, if you can tell me where I can get these superb pistols for $250, I would be most grateful.

I am really happy with my plain vanilla Springfield Armory 1911A1, parkerized finish. To me, it is about 90% reliable. The more I shoot it, the better it gets. You will not be disappointed.

My Sistema was made in Argentina in 1958. I bought it last year from Bob Ball:
