I want to get a new gun to conceal in my truck. I was looking at a snub nose .357 or a compact .45 auto. Price limit is 500 open to all suggestions.

Smith & Wesson Shield
CZ P07
Sig Sauer 2022
Stoeger Cougar
Any Smith & Wesson J frame
For a carry/truck piece it is hard to beat a Shield. Mine has been perfect in 750 rounds. Small but very accurate, soft shooting, great trigger. If it is truck only and you have to have new I would go either CZ P07 or Sig 2022. Both are badically service size with good mag capacity and both are very solid pistols.

Beretta PX4s are now $400 new, $500 for a Inox stainless model, at Budsgunshop.com. Great, light recoil pistols. Mine nears 4k flawless rounds

While at budsgunshop you will see numerous S&W J-Frame revolvers under your price limit. The .357 magnum in a J-Frame is not pleasant and .38 +P is more realistic. A J-Frame makes a nice 'Truck gun' and also can be slipped into your pocket for when you get out of the truck.

Really need a few more details. Is this strictly going to be a 'truck-gun' never to be used for CCW or HD or will it see a combination of use thereof? If you already have a primary gun for CCW/SD/HD, I will honestly say (in these tough economic times) buy a inexpensive yet reliable 'truck-gun' and spend the several hundred $$$ on accessories for your guns or even other needs you or the family may need. If this is the case, I honestly would recommend a HiPoint C9 or .45acp for $150-170 out the door. These are perfect for defensive purposes in that they are very durable, a factor when consider a truck-gun, tool/tackle-box gun etc. where the gun will be exposed to the elements and you won't mind a nick or two (though honestly the HiPoints are quite difficult to damage) .

Now, if you intend on using this outside of the truck as well for CCW/HD or the like, there are tons of options available (some fine picks already mentioned in the thread).

-Cheers

Are you sure you want to keep a new gun in your truck?

My thinking would be to get an old 'beater' revolver in case of theft. There's a lot of that going on, you know. My sister had a revolver stolen from her a few years ago out of her glovebox.

It shouldn't be too hard to find an older revolver in good shape. Look in any GS or pawn shop.

Kind of reinforced my thinking that if I can't carry it on me, leave it at home or ignore the sign!!!!!!!!!!!!!

I'd say the .357 mag in a Ruger GP-100 3". A bit over your limit $536 at buds. Other than that I'd keep an eye out for a Ruger Speed Six.
