Best moon clip for S&W M1917

I recently picked up a S&W M1917 .45acp revolver. I picked up a pack of 20 half moon clips from Sportsmans Guide for~$10. As the old adage goes, "you get what you pay for", they are to thick and cause the rounds to drag:mad: Can annyone point me in the right direction? Thanks in advance.

I got some about 15 years ago from Numrich that work perfectly, but mostly I just use 45 Auto-Rim shells and forget about clips.

What Mr. Irwin said. He mention the rimz about a year ago in another thread, and at the time,I was skeptical of plastic moon clips. But, Mike Irwin has never been wrong, and so I tried some. He was right. They are durable and easy to load and unload. You can get them from beckhamdesign.com for 6.50$/5 full moon clips. ezmoonclip.com also sells them. The rimz clips come in two sizes: one to fit the newer 625's, and another for the older 625's, 25's, and 1917's.

If you want metal, wilson combat makes them, but the standard through the years has always been the clip from ranch products. Midwayusa.com sells the ranch full moons (product # 144819) for 8$ /8 clips. The ranch, 1/3 moon clips (midway product # 126763) are available for 7$ for 25 clips.

About 99% of the time, I use the 1/3 moon clip. They're easier to load and unload, they lie flat, and you can store or carry them clipped in a cartridge box.

What Mr. Wyosmith said about .45 auto rim is true, and speer used to make a cannelured, 225 grain .451 bullet, which worked just dandy in the .45 AR. However, for a some of us, the availability and cost of .45 auto rim brass can shift what you use.

" But, Mike Irwin has never been wrong"

You obviously haven't been following my stock picks lately...

In a sea of upflow, I seem to be an expert at picking the flushers!

@Mr. Irwin: Well...you've always been a straight and true arrow here. Many thanks to you, the other moderators and the so many other members who make this such a fun and informative site.

As for the stock market, we bought a lot of ford motor company at its peak, just before the explorer roll over/firestone tire fiasco. I think we could have done better at las vegas.

FWIW, I use the same Rim-Z in my Colt and S&W 1917s, and my shaved Webley MkVI. And it is possible to wear them out if you shoot enough.

AFAIK, S&W still makes, or at least retails, half-moon (3 round) clilps like the ones originally made for the 1917 revolvers. I will note that the original millitary clips are thicker than most of those sold today, but should work OK in the 1917s if they can be found.

Jim

Not sure why you would by half-moons when the full ones are much handier. The SG metal versions work fine in my 625 and 22-4, maybe the 1917 has a smaller gap.
