Best manufacturer for M4 uppers?

Well, I hope I am not being two repetitive. I am lucking for a top-quality M4 upper. preferably from someone who will "customize" it by using a gas block which allows for a removable front sight, and a bayo lug which allows for proper bayo placement on a 16" barrel+A2 flashhider.

BTW, I also posted on AR15.com.

Armalite sells the best versions. Their upper have handguards that are 2" longer so that if you replace the front sight, you could mount a bayonet. This assumes that you have a legal lower to install the unit on.

Their recoil check might not be the right diameter for bayonet mounting though. I don't know if anybody makes a front sight base/gas block with both a bayonet lug AND a flat-top. You might have to buy the barrel, tube, and handguards and then do the sight work and maybe flash-hider work yourself.

Badger, the upper in question will be mounted to a pre-ban bushmaster lower. The armalites looked nice. I am going to give them a call mon. am. Thanks.

I am hoping that I can find a "custom" shop to build/assemble/configure the upper the way I want it. The bayo lug is optional, but would be nice. The flat-top removable front sight just seems like a good idea. If I can take of the rear sight/carry handle, why not the front? sort-thing.

I am suprised that more A3 platforms aren't shipped that way.

I think it's a question of economy. Most are willing to accept the GI front sight configuration and it's cheaper to buy those. The front sight being removable means more to buy (a detatchable front sight) and a more expensive gas block. In the field, I'd suspect that carrying around a cheap spare scope instead of a carrying handle and front sight would be not only cheaper but more appropriate. I have a red dot scope as standard on my AR-10A4 and my backup is a Burris 3x9. I figure that this serves double duty as both a sniper and assault rifle. I don't even have iron sights for it. Never took that gun to the field though and hope I never have to.

I do alot of extended hiking in the mountains where iron sights be the most economical option in terms of weight, and the most durable as well. That is really the only reason I would need the iron sights. I would not be carrying a scope on those trips.

At the range, however, I like hi-mag scopes for plinkin' clay pigeons at 300-400yds. I am willing to put some money into making this carbine shoot on par w/ my friends stock Colt 20" H-bars.

Sort of a double-duty rifle...

Am I behind the times? I thought that we were boycotting Colt and S&W for selling out? Sheez.

I draw the line at boycotting Colt. That is one company w/ to much history. Although I can't say that I have any short term plans to pick up a new Colt, If they are still around, I will be picking a Single action Army in a few years.

Anyway, I think I may have found my upper.

Armalite has an upper in their LEO/Military catalog which meets all my requirements except the bayo-lug. If I can find a stainless, barrel-mounted bayo lug, I'll pick one up. Maybe Kurt can make me one.

The upper is a flat-top, A4 upper w/ a pic. rail gas block. It has a threaded 16" stainless barrel w/ a 1/8" twist. They will mount an A2 flash-hider for me. Although I didn't really want a stainless barrel, they say it is a much more accurate set-up. It features a free-floated barrel w/ a fiberglass handguard. The dealer price is quite reasonable.

Bushmaster just didn't make the upper I wanted. The Armalite seem perfect for my use.

Stats from the LEO catalog

BARREL • 16" SST CARBINE
RIFLING TWIST • RH 1:8 INCH
FRONT SIGHT BASE • PICATINNY RAIL GAS BLOCK
MUZZLE DEVICE • A2 FLASH SUPPRESSOR

Thanks for the help.
