Best low flash defense loads for 9mm & 40.

I'm looking for quality low flash defense loads for my G19 & G23.

Currently I'm using 124gr+p Golden Sabre & 180gr Golden Sabre.

Are these good choices? I have not been able to test them in low light situations.

Also, do subsonic loads have less flash given quality ammo than hotter loads? Or does it just depend on the powder used, bbl length, & the rate at which the powder burns?

Best,

I shot some Cor-Bon 115gr JHP from my P7M8 and it had much smaller muzzle flash than Reminton 115gr JHP +P load. I've heard Cor-Bon uses powders with some chemical additives which minimize muzzle flash. I heard Federal does same with their LE ammo.

I have done low/no light drills with Cor-Bon defensive loads in .38spec, .357mag and .45. The color of the flash leans toward the red end of the spectrum and the derrogation of night vision was minimal.

I also like the moderate recoil and bullet performance of these loads.

Sam...Arizona fun, my convertible is now a swimming pool with wheels.

I've read that most defensive ammo uses some sort of flash supressant... obviously some work better than others ;)

I don't like the 180gr 40 caliber stuff because you might as well be shooting a 45 IMO. The Glock 23 is a pretty compact gun, you might want to try some lighter ammo to get a little more velocity: 135-165 grains.

I'll second what Ben's said -- 180 gr, although being a very mildly-shooting load, is not the best choice in .40, according to many. I find 135 gr almost as mild, and the Federal HS I carry in my 23 do have low flash. Currently, however, I'm thinking to switching to 155 gr -- they kick the hardest and, as a result, seem to be more powerful.

In the 9mm, my tests have shown that CorBon has a smaller muzzle flash than the Remington or the Federal.

I recently conducted an informal night-flash test with (9mm)...
Rem 124+p GS
Win 127+p+ SXT (LE)
Rem 115+p+ JHP (LE)
Rem 115+p JHP
...and that was the order from lowest to most flash. 1 and 2 nearly identical with extremely low flash. 3, I would consider acceptable for defense (barely, not a low flash round). 4 was extremely bright and I will not use it for defense anymore. What surprised me was that 3, being +p+, had less flash than the +p 4.

TN-pop:

I read here some time back that Remington 115gr JHP +P and +P+ ammo are loaded same except that +P+ uses a powder with additive which minimizes muzzle flash. This additive increased the pressure to +P+ level.

Taco...yes, Morgan recently wrote that in another current thread. It was the motivation for my night test! He was right.
