was thinking of using my mak90 next deer season. picked up a wood stock set for a fair price so I sanded, custom fit the thumb hole grip for my hand and gave it a paint job! open sights I get 3-4" groups with wolf ammo, so I put a so I put a scope on it wondered if there a more accurate brand of 7.62x39 that would be suitable for hunting than wolf sp?
and I would only use the 5 round mag while hunting!

Cor-Bon, Winchester, Remington, etc. all make 7.62x39 ammo. Some guys like the Prvi 123 rnsp. The real question is, how far away are you going to be shooting? A lever-action .30-30 groups about 3-4" for many people with the old semi-buckhorn sights, and yet, deer still die!

Try the 154 grain Herter's or Tula soft points. Those tightened up the groups in the Saiga I had from 4" to about 2". Apparently, they expand well, which is a bonus.

Your other option would be to buy some cheap Russian ammo, pull the bullets, and recharge with better powder and seat a better .310-.311 bullet. That would be the route I'd go if it was just a rifle I'm using for deer this year and not my "deer rifle."

I took a deer the other year with an AK47 with surplus yugo 7.69x39 at 100yds. It did the job but was slightly under powered.

well, I found some a couple boxes of 150gr hornady sp and a some federal 123 gr hi-shock softpoint. ill be testing them at the range soon! hoping the 150gr hornady shoot decent!! or would the extra weight shrink my kill range... my longest shots can be up to 200yds.. but don't plan on shooting at anything more than a 100

this is average grouping with wolf at a 100 open sights on a sandbag.
or should I just save this gun for wild hog hunting and personal protection?

and I would only use the 5 round mag while hunting!

Make sure you test your 5rds mags mine were POS. they were single shot with 4 extra, would of been easier to have one in the camber then undo jams.

My AKs would run with any kind of strange mags I put in them except for 5rd ones.

I have 5 5rnd mags and they all feed great. ive shot many rounds thru this gun and ive not once had a jamb or feed or any issue with it! every time I pull the trigger it fires and feeds flawlessly. very dependable!! and people tell me I got lucky as it gets decent groups compaired most ak's.
but have only had this puppy at the range, and this yr my sons will be going! one gets my rem700 in 30 06 and the other my bar 30 06 so that leave me holding my 44mag and a marlin 3030 or the mak 90...

7.62x39mm

I've not killed any deer w/ an AK, but bamaboy and I both have taken whitetails with the x39mm ctg chambered in a M77-II Ruger and a Mini-30.
Our ammo was a 135 gr (now defunct) reload, but I have no qualms or doubt that any of the domestic 125 gr SP from the big ammo companies would have worked just as well.

I would avoid the import steel jacketed HP ammo, as its performance is variable by most accounts.

I have recently loaded some 150 gr (30/30) flat nose SP's for the Mini-30 and though I want a bit more velocity, I bet they will kill deer just fine. The Speer flat nose 130 might make a good woods slug too (reload again).

If and when I get some type of sighting system on an AK that I can see, I will hunt the Klash more.
