Best Hammer Spur!

Since I got my Ruger Vaquero I never knew what a great hammer Spur was! For instance you almost need to reposition your hand to cock a Cap and Ball Colt, the Remingtons have even harder ( stronger springs?) pulls!
Nearly al semi autos have impossible hammers to handle!
The Average S&W has a somewhat small spur and is also a hard cocker.
Nearly al Colt Peacemaker clones have narrow small spurs but due to the geomitry are fairly easy to cock, However the New Vaquero wins the prize for the easiest to cock due to an excellent, longer thumbpiece than colt, hammer spur.
The Ruger is just at a natural position to handle and is larger affording better leverage and the generous horizontal portion has a long smooth area ending in a good knurled grip area.
I never thought much about making a big S/A easy to cock till I got the Vaquero!
The next time you're out "Cowboying it", see if you can get your thumb across a Vaquero!

The design if such is that you should rarely, if ever need to thumb-cock those guns. Just because they are there does not mean you should use them. Proper use of an auto or double-action revolver does not involve or require the gun to be cocked using the hammer spur...that is why they call it an "auto" or a "double-action revolver".

My new Performance Center Smith has a teardrop shaped hammer spur .
Doesn't make it better or worse to use, just kinda cool looking.

Haven't had an opportunity to try a new Vaquero but I always liked the hammer on the old version.

Slugchucker,
Ruger also offers a flatter hammer for the Vaquero Mounted rider CAS shooters.
I think it may be even better than the stock Vaquero is?
I agree springs can really help as GOOD tuning will.
I forgot to mention that my Vaquero is Stainless that also smooths things up.
All the ergonomics help make a revolver more fun to shoot.

slugchucker,
I have an El Patron Comp as my primary "tote". Tuned to my liking, it's quite a nice S.A. and it will spit 6 out rather quickly!!
It comes in very handy if/when the need arises. Like in a road rage incident (3 weeks ago)! Only twice I've ever had to " pull" a weapon in my life (I'm 57). You dont have to be on the "range" to use a S.A. to defend yourself.

In the days when the revolver ruled the center fire target game, DA S&W's and Colts were fired almost exclusively in the SA mode. S&W made special target hammers, with low and wide spurs, heavily checkered, just for that reason. Most S&W's and Colts are quite easy to cock, usually easier than any SA, and even among SA's the Remingtons are probably the hardest to cock, Colt's second, and the old S&W's the easiest. S&W made up for that, though, by the grip design, which made reaching the hammer spur more difficult.

"riding the range" and "rustlers jumping you" were used in the spirit of the context about the " el patron", not necessarily a disparagement against defending yourself with SA revolvers. If you are spitting out six, I hope your SA CAS revolver has seven holes in it's cylinder or Trigger has a good set of shocks, otherwise, I'd only carry 5 rounds.

Thanks slug,
Didn't think you ment anything disparaging. I do keep six in my six shooter. The solid block safety between the hammer and frame (when the safety notch is occupied) works well and is a great design. I am fully confident in its function. My other part time "tote" is a 5 1/2" tubed '58 Remie with a six shot conversion cyl. that has a notch between two chambers (put there by me) that the hammer fits very well. These are carried in my car, not on my person.
They both function very well.
The rest of my six shooters lay in waiting with six in (except 5 in my 5 shot '60 Pietta) and ready to go should they be needed. They all have Kirst Konversions and the safety design they use is fine with me.

In my opinion ....... Ruger's Bisley low-slung hammer spur design (plus action tune and springs) makes it the best SA thumb cock mechanism in the business !! Either in the Vaquero or Blackhawk models.
