which gun shops in houston have the lowest prices on handguns? ammo? i will be in houston for two weeks and want to check out some of the shops, or should i just wait for the show at the convention center next weekend?

You'll want to check out Carter's Country on I-10 a few miles outside the loop heading west towards Katy. You'll also want to go to an Academy store. There's one close to Carter's Country. They have good deals on Ammo. Another must-see is a gunstore on Fondren Dr. I don't know what the name is off hand, but you can find it in the phone book. They have muskets, cannons, all sorts of antique, and modern firearms of every description, and the prices aren't bad either. It is like walking into a firearms museum. Houston has hundreds of great gunstores. You'll really be in luck if they're having the monthly gunshow at the Astro Arena. You literally can't walk through the whole place in a week. If you stop at any tables you wont have time to see it all. I grew up in Houston, and my Father, brother, and myself used to hit all the cool stores, and gunshows when mom left for the day. That is the ONLY good thing about Houston I'm afraid. I joined the Army to get out of that wretched city.

actually i went to collectors (?) (the shop on fondren) today. it was real neat, almost like a firearm museum, but the prices were terrible!! i'll have to miss the astroarena show because i'm leaving that weekend, but i will be going to the george r. brown one for sure. i also grew up in houston, and i love it here. i never realized what a great city it is until i moved to cali for school. i wouldn't mind ending up back home after i graduate. i just hope the rockets get back into form!

Collector's Firearms is a really neat place.. They have an excellent selection, but I will agree with scyman on their prices, at least for pistols.. I called them once and they quoted me $669 for a Glock22!!! (I found it elsewhere for $489) I do recommend going there though, it really is like a museum.

Scyman, check out Discount Guns Warehouse on Veterans Memorial Drive. They have competitive prices and a good selection, often several used models as well. The guys there are pretty cool and helpful, never had a problem. Also check out the gun show this weekend at the convention center. That's probably your best bet for a low price.

scyman, also look at Fountain Firearms on Hwy 6 South. They are just south of Bissonnett street. Family shop, exceptional service and manners. They'll even offer you a drink when you come in.

I'll be at the George R. Brown Show this weekend too...

NRA? Good. Now joing the GOA!

If you don't mind an hour drive up to Aggieland, there is a great shop in College Station called Champion Firearms (www.championfirearms.com) that has great prices, usually about 10% or more less than what you might find elsewhere. No, I am not affiliated with them, but did purchase three guns there earlier this year.

Grew up in houston myself. In the hill country now. Anyway, check Fountain Firearms. I have gone to them all,and here you will get the best service around. Also, check out Devogue indoor gun range in Arcola. They are just east of HWY 6 on 521 goinign to Angleton. You can shoot there,as they have rentals, and its a great gun crowd that hangs out there. They are open on weekends.

Where are the hundreds of "cool" gun shops in Houston? Except for an occassional "deal" (read normal price), Carter's Country has outrageous prices on guns. Discount Guns on Veterans Memorial has the best prices, but be VERY CAREFUL when dealing with them. I bought three guns from them, but had a problem with two. The second time I got ripped off on a refurb Glock that was supposed to come with a high cap mag. (From what I understand, I'm not the only person who got ripped off by Discount Guns). I won't deal with them anymore.

Fountain Firearms is decent but has high prices. Ammo Dump's prices are laughable.... $750 for a Walther P99 when the going price was $560. Bailey's prices are also very high.

My advice is wait until the gun show at Brown and stop at Bachman Pawn and Guns. They almost always have the best prices around on guns.

I wish Houston had a cheap and honest gun store. It would clean up.

I have to throw in my favorite.
C and C Smiths Gunwerkes. It's on the south bound feeder of 59 past Hilcroft before you get to Bellaire. It's in the same strip as Pappas Seafood Restaurant and a mattress store. Prices are pretty good. If they don't have it, they can get it. I've had the best customer service from them. They also regularly do gunshows so they keep their prices down.
Carter's Country- Too expensive
Collectors- Too expensive
Discount Gun Warehouse- okay
Fountain Firearms- expensive

Thanks, Spirex288, didn't even know about the C&C place. I'll have to check that store out. Where do you folks from Houston go practice? I usually head over to the American Shooters Center on weekends. The show at the convention center is pretty good, and the prices there are more reasonable than some of the stores here.

Short answer, Scyman? Forget about the stores and hit the show.

If anybody is a LEO, check out Trooper's Supply. Some friends of mine with HPD are always bragging about the prices there, and they're always right. If you're not a LEO, they won't talk to you. Period. :( Ah, well, I guess on what we pay HPD, we can't begrudge them a cheap source of toys all to themselves.

Everybody is right about Collector's. It reminds me of a few women I've known over the years: Pretty, but expensive. besides, there's something wrong with a gun store that won't deal with reloading.

Carter's gets as much of my business as I can afford because they're usually great people. My only problems are with their range and all that <expletive deleted> brass all over the <expletive deleted> place which is a handloader's nightmare. Not so bad with a bolt or a wheelgun, though.

Bailey's on the south side of town has its moments, both good and bad. If they'd stop interpreting a request for an RCBS item as a request to be talked into a Hornady equivalent, I'd feel much friendlier about them, but they do have some nice deals, and the range is okay. Never looked at their guns, sadly.

American Shooting centers is a nice place to shoot, but that wind reminds me of Amarillo.

I'll have to follow up the C & C and Bachman's advice.

Steve

I usually go to ASC also. Lately I've been busy and haven't been able to go.
Just some FYI, starting June 1, 2000, American Shooting Center will no longer allow shooters to use CCI Blazer ammunition.
There are several other ranges but are too far from where I live. I know Carter's in North Houston has a range. There's also another one on I-10. I think it's the Texas Shooters Range or something like that.
I wish I could make the gunshow in June.
I made it out to the last "Texas' Largest Gunshow" and it was a blast.

i made it out to discount guns today, and it wasn't all i expected, although they did have a very nice sale on 357 sig. a box of the speer lawman was only 9.99! i'm used to paying around 15 a box. i can't wait for the show on saturday! also, i stopped by the sportman's outlet range on 1960 in humble. it was a prety nice range, but then again i haven't checked out too many other ranges here so i don't have much to compare it to. i'm gonna miss home even more when i head back to cali.
