Best Erosion Gage

So I'm thinking about aquiring another M1 Garand when I head out to the BIG gun show in Tulsa this year.

I was hoping for some suggestions on a good throat/barrel erosion gage I could carry around with me to check the various rifles I see.

Ok let me try a different question. How accurate is the method of using an HXP (HXP 65 in my case) round to put in the end of the barrel point first and measuring the distance between the neck of the case and where it rests in the barrel.

I tried this with my M1903 and had measured just under a 1/4" of space.
