Best clear high gloss finish for wood grips

Hey I was wondering what everyone's opinion was on putting a high gloss finish on wood grips. I have some wood grips that I would like to have a little more shine to them, but I do not want to ruin them. Also do not want to change the color, so I am looking for a clear.

I am looking for something I can get at Home Depot or Lowes and apply fairily easily.

What are your opinions on the most durable and also easy to apply. I do not have any woodworking experience or skills.
 
linseed oil is traditional for gun stocks, if you want a higer gloss finish you could use some wax and buff it. If you dont care about tradition go with polyurathane in semi gloss, this is atually a stronger\harder finish than the oil. Spar urathane would also be a good choice it has a higher concentration of UV blockers and keeps the sun from fading the finish, its often used for finishing outdoor furnature.
 
Oh, for the oil you wipe it on with a cloth, for urathanes you brush it on with light coats sanding inbetween with finner and finner grits. If you are using a open grained wook like Oak it is a good idea to use a filler product to get a smooth finish. All of these can be found at the local hardware stores.
 
Tru Oil works great as langenc said.

Brushing it on and letting it dry produces a very nice gloss finish, doing the same and then buffing with #0000 steel wool produces a very nice deep semi-gloss. This is easy to accomplish on smooth wood, but with checkering on stocks or grip panels it does become time consuming trying to get the shiny finish out of all the checkering grooves.

Since you are seeking a high gloss finish, it should be an easy job.
 
Whatever you use remember to use a toothbrush on the checkering so they don't fill with finish. Apply the finish to the checkering, then toothbrush out the excess.

I'd recommend truoil or minwax polurethane to meet your criteria. The wipe on polyurethane is easy to work with and dries fast.
