Is Shooter's Choice Bore Cleaner Safe? I've spent a good hunk of change accurizing my Rem. 700. Is Shooter's choice overkill? What in your opinion is the best cleaner. ANd how often should I clean it?
I use Shooter's Choice Black Powder Gel for cleaning. It works GREAT. Being a gel it sticks to the brush and you can "scrub" the powder fouling out. Make sure you use a bronze brush and not a steel one. After I've removed the powder fouling I use Sweet's to remove the copper. I put the Sweets on a NYLON bore brush and stroke it a few times. NEVER leave any copper solvent on your barrel more than about 5 minutes. And after removing the Sweet's (or Barnes or other) with a dry patch, run a patch with Hoppe's ( NOT SHOOTERS CHOICE!!!! it reacts with Sweet's) to remove the copper solvent.
As to how often to clean; depends on how much you shoot and how fast your accuracy degrades with a dirty barrel.
Shooter's Choice is great! It is safe and effective. Many shooters (myself included) use a mixture of Kroil and Shooter's Choice. I personnally use a mixture of 25%:75% Kroil:Shooter's Choice.
I have found that Butch's Bore Shine works best for me. I have found that it works faster than Hoppe's Bench Rest, Shooters Choice and is easier on the barrel (and nose) than Barnes.
Shooter's Choice is one of the safest--no ammonia to (potentially) cause "stress-corrosion cracking".It is highly regarded by the Benchrest fraternity, as is "Kroil", as mentioned above. Best, weegee.
