It depends, if you want one of the "new semi autos" the 391 or the gold is an excellent choice. Most guys are going for the 391.
If you want to stay within a budget, I would track down an old Rem Mod 1100 with a straight comb Trap or Skeet stock. These stocks are easily identified by having a red/orange factory recoil pad. Avoid a field wingmaster stock, thier geometery is not set up for competition shooting. The old 1100's can be picked up for around $400 to $500.
Avoid the new factory 1100's, they have been having alot of trouble with them.
These old guns typically come with a fixed choke barrel. I would l have a gunsmith professionally install tubes in the barrel. This can be done for around $250 with a full set of tubes. Go with a 28" or 30" barrel.
I like the Model 1100 because spare parts can be had almmost anywhere and they are easy to work on.
The biggest problem with ALL shotguns barrels with choke tubes, is that some are not bored properly and the pattern ends up being off center.
Whatever you get, make sure that the barrel shoots straight. Shoot it from sandbags like a rifle at 25 - 30 yards and make sure the pattern is centered or slightly high.
