Hi, its me again, and mayby some of have read my post about the best centerfire catridge for hunting deer and elk. I think I will buy a modern gun later and I want to start to hunt with an bp rifle catridge . Am from austria and at first I will start to hunt deer, but which caliber would you recomend for that purpose. I will buy an sharps or remington rolling block replica.

Not sure what calibers are available in the two mentioned. I have an original Remington Rollingblock which was a 7X57 and I had it converted to 40-65 which would do the deer and elk just fine. I also have a Browning High Wall falling block in 38-55 which would also do deer and it would be OK for elk with perfect bullet placement (likely just a little light for elk). For having ammunition available the recommendation for 45-70 is probably the best. 45-90 and 45-110 are like my 40-65 requiring making your own ammunition and usually requires finding brass that can be made into what you need.

I have a 50-100, a 45-120 and a 45-90. All are great and will dispatch all North American game. It really is up to the shooter and the loads you practice with. My confidence rifle is the big 50. I can change bullet weights and know that my original 1871 rolling block action with Badger barrel will get it done anywhere between 50 and 200 yards without a lot of muss or fuss with sights etc. I have shot it a bunch and just know how to move the hold over out to 200 yards from 100. In fact, in terms of knock down power, I shot a buffalo with it a couple of weeks ago with a 750 grain cast flat point.
It wasn't a long shot, maybe 50 yards but the 2200lb bull went down like a rag doll.

Good luck with your choice....don't buy a cheap one!
