Masaad Ayoob is fairly controversial, and I don't accept his writings as absolute, but he does offer some interesting opinions. Bill Jordan's "No Second Place Winner" and Elmer Keith's " Sixguns" and "Hell, I Was There" are timeless, although written before the "wondernines" and .40's came into popularity.
