best book on BP revolver shooting

Depends on what you want to know.

There is no single 'best' book. There are many 'specialty' books about certain designs, and there are books about black powder shooting which discuss various revolvers in general. Two that I think every bp shooter should have are:

Percussion Pistols And Revolvers: History, Performance and Practical Use by Mike Cumpston and Johnny Bates

and:

The Complete Blackpowder Handbook by Sam Fadala

There are many, many more.

There is no single 'best' book.

I think there is. PERCUSSION PISTOLS AND REVOLVERS gets my vote since Mike Cumpston (mec) is a member here and therefore 'family':)

Just a loyalty thing.

Loyalty is a great thing, but even Mike will tell you that their book is not an end-all on the subject of bp revolvers. His attempt to update it and improve the pictures last year was thwarted by his publisher; I'm sure he would love to be able to finish that effort. In the mean time we'll have to resort to acquiring other books - creating a library, as it were.

Don't get me wrong - I think it's the best one on the subject, that's why I recommended it, and if you can only own one, that's the one. But it doesn't have everything, so you do need a couple of others - thus, no single best book.

since the thing came out in 2005, I've shot several more revolver types, had some intersting experiences with walker and picket bullet loads and done quite a bit more with stiff lubricated under ball wads. The good ones really keep the bore clean for extended firing-wonder wads are a bit light and fluffy to work well. I suspect the original lack of experimentation with good quality wads is what I regret most about not being to update the book.
