When my kids were little, I kept a loaded 12 gauge SxS w/20" barrels hanging from a nail in the closet. It's an old house, if you want the bedroom door locked, you open the closet door. Simple, strong, and foolproof and when the closet door opened, the shotgun was right there. After that, I kept a Rem 870 w/4 in the mag and hammer down, safety off. Two shots light load #8 and 2 shots buckshot. While it didn't happen in my house, on a couple of occassions, i have stopped a situation cold with the sound of the slide racking on a pump shotgun. I've heard all that hype about not letting the badguy know where you are but if he's close enough to hear the slide rack, he already knew I was there. At that point, I'm not hiding anyway.
