Best attractants or lures

I was always told hunting deer to use bait, the deer will ALWAYS come for food. It's worked great for some years now. However, this year in the Michigan LP has a baiting ban because of a worry about CWD. What attractants work best with what method of use? I've only used them on rare occasion, without much luck in the past. My brother in law had some success with the tinks incense sticks, but unfortunately, we were on a lunch break when a buck came in and rubbed the heck out of a bunch of little saplings where that thing had been burning half the morning. So, any advise is helpful, even with calls, which I have only had minor luck with as well. Oh, and I'm using a bow, so they have to get pretty close.

A lot of attractants will only work during pre-rut or rut and a lot of them are garbage and a waste of money. If you have the time and inclination next year just put in a simple food plot. Till up a parcel or two of land and plant a variety of attractants/food. My buddy plants clover/alfalfa for early season and turnips for late season. You will have consistent visits by deer even late in the year -and its legal.:)
