Best AR

New to the AR scene, read alot of the other threads and see nothing about the Smith&Wesson AR. Are they any good? If not what are some of the problems? Wanting to buy one this summer for recreational use and some predator hunting.

Welcome to the forum. I have a SW M&P15X. They are solid rifles; not top of the line but very good, IMO. They will serve 99% of us very well. They come with a number of different options and in different configurations so you'll need to do a little research with your needs in mind.

SW recently came out with a model they call their "Sport" model at a very attractive price (street prices around $600). They lack a couple of features their other rifles have which may or may not be of interest to you.

-- They lack a chrome lined barrel. This increases barrel life for HIGH volume shooters and is easier to clean. The Sport model has a melanite coated barrel which some people claim is just as good. I cannot speak intelligently to that.

-- They lack a forward assist. As the name indicates, this is used to assist a round to move forward and chamber. But, it is not absolutely necessary as you can do this yourself by hand. The original ARs lacked a forward assist.

-- They lack a dust cover for the chamber area. For plinking, it's probably unnecessary. Most of us are not battling sandstorms when we shoot.

Search M&P15, lots of info on the Sport model and others.

I have the OR and Sport plus the 15-22.

They are great rifles, accurate and functions. Lots of satisfied owners including myself.

I have the M&P PSX and it's a great rifle. Well made, reliable, and decent accuracy for a piston driven AR. I haven't had any of the wear issues many other piston ARs suffer from.

What plouffedaddy says. I have one and it has been stone cold reliable. The new barrels are not chrome lined and, while mine is, I am not sold on it being any better in the long run than the new Melonite process. I don't think you can wrong with an M&P 15 from Smith.

The best AR's are Colt, LMT, Daniel Defense, BCM, Noveske, Larue Tactical and I know I'm missing one or two others.

S&W's are okay guns, not the best, but they run okay. For a professional gun that is going to see a high round count or a self defense gun that may need to save your life they generally aren't a first choice but if its just going to be a range toy then they are okay. You get what you pay for in the AR world. IMO spend the extra bucks and get the proven gun; there is a difference.

With this question, all you get are people's opinion's. What's best to one, may not be best to another...

With that being said, I like the S&W's. Good guns for the money and I know several people that own them and don't have any problems out of them. I own a Rock River Arms and wouldn't trade it for any of the other's mentioned...

Take a look at a Colt 6920 OP. Colt is the standard by which other AR's are usually judged.

The 6920 is currently selling at very competitive prices too.

TacticalDefense1911 nailed it with his post , "the best AR's are Colt, LMT, Daniel Defense, BCM, Noveske, Larue Tactical..."

With all respect, save a bit more money and go with one of these choices, in the long run you'll be glad you did.
