Talking grain, what is the best to go with? For either "plinking" at the range or home defence.

Please explain why you think one is better then the other.

Federal HST 147g for self defense.

Edit, forgot a plinking choice:
Whatever WWB or Blazer Brass for the range (usually 115g).

I didn't vote. Regarding factory ammo only --

A> For plinking and general range practice, I tend to go with what is cheapest, and that tends to be 115 gr FMJ.

B> For SD, that's a whole 'nuther thing. There's lots of personal preference regarding that, and I doubt there will be any sort of consensus about it. I tend towards the middle ground premium 124 gr +P JHP offerings but I recognize the redeeming values of the 115 and 147 gr offerings as well.

For SD 124 gr JHP,for plinking WWB 115, Blazer Brass 115,Mastercast reman. 125 gr RN. since the FBI gave up on the 147gr Hst, due to over penetration and lack of expansion, so have I.

For SD, I prefer the 124-127grn bullet as I feel that gives the best balance between velocity (i.e. energy and expansion) and penetration. For range work, I'll take whatever inexpensive FMJ the local funshop has which usually turns out to be 115grn WWB, Blazer Brass, or S&B.

4< I'd go 147 grain
4> I'd go for 124+p

heavier bullets usually work better but 9mm is dependent on velocity as well. shorter barrels have lower velocities but lighter bullets have higher velocity.

for example, without doing extensive research and possibly even extensive ballistic tests outside the realm of possibility for mere mortal men, I would use a quality 147 grain JHP in a full size pistol like a Beretta or glock17 while something like a kahr, glock 26 or other sub-compact I'd go for a 124gr

all the info you gleam here on this board however should really just be a starting point for you. use this to gather a cross section of ammo and see what functions and is most accurate in your pistol.

117 Grain Schootz and Willoughby triple hollowpoint, chrome cased, with the -P- headstamp. This is the best ammo in the world, all the experts agree. If you are shooting something else, you are just wanting to die as all else is substandard. Trouble is, that this ammo is only available to the Secret Service, certain Navy Seals officers, and the French Foreign Legion. I got a bunch for free from my uncle Josh who works at the factory. So now I don't worry about the 9MM being as effective as a .45, this round is equal to two hits from the Speer +P police loaded .45. 2 5/8 better than the best .40. :p

As others have responded, you have your poll set for 1 question but you are asking two different questions. Voting will not work for this poll.

Plinking: 115
SD: 124 (standard pressure)

Best 9mm round?

Federal HST 147 grain bullets are very hard to beat for a self defense round. You have the expansion and the weight to penetrate.

Kelty, it was a parody. There is no best round for 9MM, in ultimate terms. Or for any caliber for that matter. People that want to know what is best in most cases are gonna get opinions, but disappointment searching for the holy grail of guns, cartridges, holsters, etc. There may be a pool of better choices for a particular purpose. Otherwise there would only be one type of anything.

For Plinking, practice, any inexpensive ammo will do, avoid Wolf, and the brown bear kind of stuff. Foreign ammunition is not good.

For defense, Federal Tactical HST 124 gr.

Nuff said.
