Best all around load for home defense/carry

long shot

Would like opinions on the best 9mm & .40 load, that can be used under the widest range of circumstances.Short & standard pistol barrels, heavy cloth ect. and still perform well. Thanks in advance...long shot!

Favorite loads are like, well, ... <g>

However, my nominations for 9x19:

Speer Gold Dot +P 124gr
ProLoad (uses Gold Dot) +P 124gr
Rem Golden Saber +P 124gr

For .40, the same but in 165gr.

All show reliable penetration, expansion, feeding and ignition in my pistols.

If/when released to mere mortals, the Federal Expanding FMJ bullets would seem to be perhaps even better; time will tell.

J,

Yeah, I am anxious to try out the expanding FMJ's. I sent an e-mail to Federal asking for info and a tentative date as to when they might hit the market. Well, I got a rude a$$ reply letting me know, in no uncertain terms, that they are not available. As soon as I see them I will buy some to try but I will never bother Federal for customer service again unless I have a major problem to take up with them. I hate dealing with SOME big companies. :( If I didn't love Federal ammo so much I wouldn't buy from them any more. :)

Roger that, but some companies' products are so good that it's hard not to do business with them. The only personal defense ammo in my .45s is Fed 230 gr HS. In other calibers, I usually have two or three flavors around, but in .45 ACP I keep only one. And the Fed tac buck and slug loads are all that goes in my 870 PM.

Hmmm... The best 9mm & .40 S&W for the widest range of circumstances, would probably be a middle weight bullet in each caliber. Personally, I like Proload's 9mm 124 gr. +P and Remington's .40 S&W 165 gr. Golden Sabre... Those are the two premium rounds that I use for those two calibers...

in 9mm i like the corbon 115 grain loads. HOT STUFF. out of my wife's 226 Sig i have every confidence in them.

in 40 S&W i like the 135 grain corbons in the summer (lightly clothed Badguys). in the winter/spring/fall i like the 165 grain Golden Saber for people wearing more clothing. i shoot them in a K40 Kahr or a S&W custom 4006.

Unless you are in the protection or LE field, you really should be looking a some of the more exotic self defense ammo, like RBCD or Magsafe. In urban environements where you where you are most likely to run into situations on foot in the streets, or in self defense in your house, you don't need something that will go through brickwalls and car doors and windshields. You want something that will give up its energy into the perp with little chance of over penetration. Something that will work 100% of the time as far a giving up this energy with little chance of ricochette. VIP protection and law enforcement have different problems then citizens intereseted in self defense, just as the soldier has different problems then the LEO. The rules of engagement must dictate the proper choice, and yes there rules of engagement for citizens if you want to stay out of jail. Don't sell these rounds short. They were designed specifically for self defense.

Hello. Since you mention all bbl lengths, I'd likely go with the Triton 115 gr +P PHP in the 9mm and something like WW 115 gr Silvertip or 165 gr Golden Saber in the .40 S&W. Best.
