Best AK sight?

Standard sight, Kobra or scope? Plinking & close range ( under 100yds ) hunting. On a target range the sights work OK for me but in the woods, early and late in the day I have a problem seeing them againts the target so maybe a suggestion on how to improve them. The Kobra looks fun with an attractive price. But do their low price reflect their durability? BTW my rifle already has the rail installed. Thanks!

I've only used the stock iron sights, but the Kobra does look good. It should work well at twilight, like a scout scope, both eyes open and no magnification.

I've seen several styles of sight rail on various AK clones. I saw one on a Saiga (sp?) that seemed to be straight, but the one on my SAR has a sort of ramp. I'll pay more attention to it if I start shopping for a scope.

There are apparently two types of Kobra, too. One uses a hard-to-find Russian battery and the other uses our standard (AA or AAA). It's not just a wiring difference - the lamp is a different voltage.

The Russian scopes I've seen look good for target shooting, but with the long rubber eyepiece, they seem clumsy for hunting, especially in low light.

Whatever you get, when you try it in the woods, give us a "range report".

Regards.

The Russian scopes available for the rails are very nice for the money. I have one of the PSOs. You would expect it to be built cheap, but the glass is high quality.

The Kobra is a fast acquisition less accurate type scope, or in other words you could put it on and hit a man sized target at 100 to 200 yards pretty fast.

The PSOs have different reticle setups. Some are inverted chevrons and others are more of a crosshair setup. They are more of a sniping scope, or take your time to hit a pie plate sized target at 100 to 200 yards. Some of the PSOs also have built in rangefinders.

Valmet M-76 issue sights, with the rifle zero'd to hit 1/2 sight width above the top of the post. Rear peep flips over for night sight, and the front sight has a flip-up night gizmo too. The night iron sights glow, and are separately adjustable for elevation.

And it's a rear peep sight in daylight mode, pistol-style open rear sight in night sight mode.

Hitting above the post means you hold a bit under your target and can therefore SEE it. Soda cans at 100 yards aren't just hit, they're center-punched!

I just got my Kobra in the mail today. Won't get to try it on the rifle for another 3 weeks, but .... man is this thing nice!

4 different patterns
Several brightness levels
Integral mount - no rings required
takes 2 AA batteries
and, most important, it looks cool!

If you're shooting at about a hundred yards the stock iron sights should be fine. But, the Kobra is faster and more fun. I definately see why people hype these so much for plinking.

best source for the Kobra sight is probably

Cheapo, dumb question: What are Valmet sights, where can I see a picture, and how do they mount on an AK-style rifle?

dummer question: What is Valmet?

Regards.

Hey dZ! Me too! Smart like rock.

valmet is a finnish (not a typo, as in belonging to finnland) company whiched produced possibly the finest AK clone in the world. (produced in 7.62x39mm and 5.56x45mm)
the israeli galil is suppose to have sprung from combining the valmet and the ar

open sights are nice but the kobra is cool and inexpensive. if you like a nice "tactical" scope, look into busnell's "turkey scope" (designed for shotgun use), 1.75-4x with interesting cross-hairs (heavy lines holding a ring w/fine lines inside).

I just use the iron sights out to 200, you can put liquid paper on the sights to improve visibility in the woods (you lose 'em in bright sunlight tho).
