Best 9mm Loads?

I'm getting my first 9mm next week, a Browning Hi Power(I've already heard the low power joke). What are the best non-LEO 9mm loads. I shot the hydra shoks and the golden sabers in my .45. Thanks for your help.

I've heard very good things about the Golden Sabers. They tend to expand more consisently than the Gold Dots, based on the tests I've seen.

Cor-bon 115 +p seems to perform well in jello (12 inches and .56 expanded size IIRC) from many different barrel lengths. It also has plenty of energy if that's a factor for you. And if you believe in the Marshall Sanow findings, it is rated as a 92% one shot stop.

Some have expressed concerns about underpenetration with some 115 grain bullets, but a more knowledgeable person will have to step in on that.

In 9, I like the Nyclads. The blue coating aids in feeding and the squishy jacket free lead mushrooms like a ripe tomato on a brick wall.

Hello. For personal protection from a 9mm HP, I'd go with 124 gr Triton JHPs. These resemble Hornady XTPs, but are not. They turn inside out. The pointed ogive offers very, very reliable feeding. If you're concerned with overpenetration, I'd go with Triton 115 gr QuikShok. Both of the previous loads are +P. In a standard pressure load, I'll second the Federal Nyclad 124 HP for the best standard pressure load. Nyclads group better for me than Federal's 115 gr JHP in the HP. Best.

FWIW, my Hi-Power (clone) really likes the 124gr Golden Sabres. Makes great groups with 'em.

Batman,
JellO? ;) lol

I agree that I'd stick with Corbon 115gr, Remington 124gr +P GS, or ProLoad/Speer GD +P and Hornady 124gr XTP's if they'd wake up and make a +P Load.

In order of preference for my G-19:

1)124gr+p Rem. Golden Sabre- performs very well in tests I've seen. Pen & exp through cloth is excellent, expansion is often just as good through clothed gel as some loads expansion in bare gel.(Also like the std. 124 GS)

2)124gr+p+ Fed. HS- this is an LE-only load. However, you can purchase it from bluegrass armory at www.bgarmory.com, they also carry Fed. 115gr+p+ 9BPLE load.
*Check your local laws, but in (most) states it's not illegal for you to possess LE-only ammo.

3)135gr+p Triton HiVel- 1200fps & 432fpe from a 4in bbl w/ the added weight of the 135gr bullet. Also a good performer through cloth in limited tests that I've seen.

Speer's 124+p Gold Dot does not perform well through cloth, it expands well in bare gel, & is better against hard barriers do to the bonded core of the GD. Proloads version is not loaded as hot as Speer's.

Not being LE, I'm personally more concerned w/ a bullet's performance through cloth, not through hard barriers such as car bodies. However, your personal needs may be different.

There are some other loads I like, such as Rem. 115gr+p std. jhp, but the above are my 3 favorite, & I usually go w/ the middleweight loads.

As a side note, all loads above should also perform well from short bbl. pistols should you ever want to purchase a 9mm for concealed carry.

Best,
long shot!

For standard pressure load I like Federal 115gr JHP aka 9BP.
For +P load I like Remington 115gr JHP or Corbon 115gr JHP.
All these loads are easy to find at local gun shops.

Don't forget Federal's new 124 grain +P Expanding Full Metal Jacket (EFMJ).

I had recommended the Corbons to my brother for his Beretta Border Marshall, when he fired them he didn't get groups, he got a pattern, with a lot of misses. I personally like the product put out by Triton. In my 9mm I use their 115gr. and 125gr. HiVel loads. Next I will be trying their Quick Shot as recommended by Fernando.

Corbons 115 grain JHP's don't do 12 inches in Gelatin but rather 8.5 to 9 inches. Thats still enough for most applications in my opinion. I don't like the gold dot in 9mm not enough expansion. I just tested the standard velocity stuff and it only got to .49 caliber. The +p 124 grain sabers would be my choice.

I intend to go into harms way.

Any 115g JHP+P or +P+; Remington makes an excellent round.

For exotics try GAA (natch), Pro Load, CorBon, Triton, Black Hills, or one of the big-boy loads (Hydra-Shok, Golden Saber, Gold Dot).

I personally prefer carbon 115 +p JHP
I use them for my berretta g-elite and
beretta 92 compact good power with great
expansion you just have to practice with
them a bit because the x-tra power makes
follow ups a little slower when you first
start shooting with them.

In order, my HP prefers :
115 Silvertips
115+P Triton
115 Fiocchi hollow points.

Also very good and very accurate is the 115 FMJ Canadian surplus ammo.

It will be intersting to see the results of Federal's new 124 grain +P Expanding Full Metal Jacket round once there is real world data available. It's a very promising design and will probly be very popular.

I too will be getting a 9mm (my first in this caliber) and base the decision to buy one as a direct result of the improvements in ammo in reccent years. (read: I've been a .45 ACP fan for all eternity) :D
