Best 7-Round Flat-Base Mags?

Hello all, I am wanting to get some GI style 7-round blued/black magazines that have the original flat base plate so they'll fit in a USGI magazine carrier. My current modern 8 round mags with extended base pad don't fit so well, but I have a web belt rig for my trench shotgun and want to stick with the old school 1911 stuff.

So, can anyone recommend me a good "old style" blued 1911 7-shot magazine with flat baseplate? I see many different kinds, but am not sure which ones will feed reliably. I also would prefer not to break the bank if that's possible.

Thanks all! :)

You may consider Wilson Combat Lo-Profile 8-rd mags, which don't have the protruding rubber base.

I had to buy them because my Mitch Rosen Stylemaster shoulder holster will only hold 7-rd mags! I even tried to gently and then more firmly stretch the leather for several days to get traditional 8 rounders to fit, but it wasn't happening. The Lo-Profiles fit perfectly.

If Browning wanted 8 round mags .He would have made 8 round mags I carry and own 7 :D

Their not all that hard to fine look on internet.

7 round, the Springfield branded 7 round works well for me.

8 round, in the same size package, Chip McCormic.

Another vote for Springfield

Others have already mentioned the Springfield branded 7 round mags. I have three of them that I purchased 11 years ago with my Springfield Armory G.I. stainless model.

After 11 years of range time all three mags continue to function perfectly. You can't ask for more.

Genuine Colt brand 7-round mags are available from Brownells. My other choice is Check-Mate (Check-Mate is an OEM supplier to Colt and many other 1911 manufacturers). Order Check-Mate directly from their web site:

7 Rd Mags

I agree that the Colt brand mags are good. I have several blue 7 round magazines and a few 8 round stainless magazines that all fit flush.

I recommend Springfield and chip mcormick 7rd mags. I ordered a new 7rd colt branded magazine from midway, and it performed poorly in my Springfield for the first 100 or so rounds. Caused double feeds, a light primer strike, and other jams. I believe it has worked itself out and is broken in, the the last few times i have used it i didnt have any issues, although i dont trust it yet. The Springfield magazines havent given me any trouble

They also sell 7 round mags with a "GI stamped bottom".

CDNN has some good deals, but you have to be careful. There are a LOT of counterfeit "GI" 1911 magazines out there. The location of the witness holes in the photo for this listing strongly suggests that these are fakes. I wouldn't touch them.

Most of Colt's 1911 magazines are made by Check-Mate, and I think the Defender mags are by Metalform. Check-Mate also manufactures 1911 mags for many of the other pistol brands, including Kimber, as well as making them for Chip McCormick and Wilson Combat. I see no reason to look farther than Colt or Check-Mate when looking for a "standard" 7-round magazine (which is, after all, what Browning designed for the pistol). That's what I use, and I've never seen any valid reason to change what has been working for more than 100 years.

You'll have to see what works in your own guns.
The McCormick 8 rounders are the same dimensions as 7 rounders and have proven very reliable for me.
But then, so have plenty of low dollar no name seven rounders from the local gun show.
It all depends on your particular guns.
If yours are picky be sure to get the original style mags with the little bump on the followers.
They help feeding for cantankerous 1911s.

I went ahead and tried to buy three of those GI magazines from the CMP. They wouldn't let me, as I'm not a member.

I am leaning towards the Checkmate magazines as I've read good things about them.

I don't think anyone but Check-Mate is currently making mags of true G.I. configuration - full-tapered feedlips, 7rds, G.I. follower - and, as noted, they're OEM makers for Colt, Kimber, and others.
Their online order page appears to be down right now (I know that their own products take a back seat to supplying their customers, including Uncle Sam, for whom they make Beretta and M14 mags, so sometimes the Check-Mate branded products are in short supply), but the part number for the G.I. mag is: CM45-7-B-GI

I have three or four Metalform mags that, other than their having parallel feedlips rather than tapered, are G.I. style. They are inexpensive and function well.

If the web site is down, call (631) 491-1777. Ask for Jackie Santoro -- she's the daughter of the (now deceased) founder, and as far as I know she handles the direct magazine sales. Tell Jackie what you need, and she'll fix you up.
