best 45 round for carry??

My SIG P220 prefers 230gr HydraShoks.

NO lawyer in his right mind would object to handloads as there are no documentable cases where handloads were an issue that cost anyone a day in jail or a dollar in civil loss. Worry not.
The ONLY reason not to carry handloads is RELIABILITY. Failure rate in a two year study showed us that clearly.
As for the .45, there are plenty of good designs out there. If you got caught with FMJ you would not have a problem. HP's to expand need speed. I prefer the +P Remington 185 grain JHP which is a clone of the Corbon load and half the price. There is no scientific nor reliable information in existance to show one bullet vs another. So far all we have gotten is unverifiable junk science with non-documentable claims.

Federal Hydra-Shok 230gr. : best overall feeding record in a variety of .45's I have tried it in. The bullet shape is about perfect for feeding reliability plus I like the heavy case cannalure which keeps the bullet in place as it impacts the feeding ramp. VERY accurate round & the downrange performance is well documented.

Most of the loads from the major manufacturers will do well from a terminal viewpoint... The best thing is for you to try out the various loads in your gun to see how the accuracy and (most importantly) the feeding reliability is in your gun... If you have trouble feeding Hydrashocks, Gold Dots or Golden Sabers, then try out SXT's which have a more rounded bullet profile...

I think the last time we did this the votes were overwhelmingly in favor of the 230 gr HydraShok. It runs 100% in all my .45s, from V10 to 5" guns and a couple in between.

I will agree with Kimber Man, though my preferences go in this order:

200gr. ProLoad +P
230gr. ProLoad +P
200gr. Speer Gold Dot
230gr. Speer Gold Dot
230gr. Ranger SXT/Black Talon

I like the Speer bullet, but the consistency, reduced recoil, and accuracy of the ProLoad combined with the fact that ProLoad uses the same Speer bullet wins the contest for me.

The one that most reliably functions with your gun is the one to carry. As there are a dozen other topics stating that "there ain't no perfect bullet", use the one you can count on to feed and fire and to hit where you want it to hit.

While I agree with 'no magic bullet', I prefer the Speer 200gr. +P Gold Dot. From testing I have been involved in, it expanded beautifully, penetrated to an acceptable depth, held together better than anything, and really made the ballistic jelly jump and quiver like nothing else!!! ;)

I like the Speer 200 Gr. Gold Dot +P load, too. Shoot it at night, and notice that there is very little muzzle flash. I have seen it kill stuff. I recommend it highly.

My last .45 favored 230 grain HydraShocks.

Hopefully my next will, too. If not, I'll go for what works best with it- and will not woryy about the brand name.

Does anyone offer factory BALL ammo in +P configuration? I've decided to switch to ball since expansion is a dubious thing, but if I can't find a ball round in +P, then I might as well go with some ball-shaped JHPs like the 230 grain hydra-shoks.

What is the advertised velocity of Pro-Load's 200 and 230 grainers? What about Speer's 185?

Let me begin by saying that all my recommendations come with the following caveat:

Try at least 250-500 rounds of any ammunition in question through the specific gun for function before making your decision. It must feed and function properly before anything else.

With that, here is the published velocities for ProLoad.

185gr. BHP 1050fps
200gr. BHP 1000fps (+P)
230gr. BHP 920fps (+P)

With the Speer Bonded Hollow Point, penetration in ballistic gelatin through heavy clothing is improved by slightly decreasing velocities in this instance.

IMHO, use 230g ammo that has the superb Golden Saber on top..........but if you want speed use +P ammo that wears the 185g R-P JHP.

I use Winchester 230gr +p ranger SXT(Black Talon) excellent expansion and penetration. If you can`t get these in +p or standard pressure go with the 230GR Gold DOT.The nice thing about 45 is that even ball works okay but these loads would be my first choice
