Best .45 Auto Pistol?

Gentlemen,

I am looking at getting a .45 Auto. I have always been a revolver fan, but decided I needed something a little more compact than my S&W 629 for carry use. I am leaning towards a government model, possibly a Griffon Combat Commander. I know Kimbers are great, but they are also very spendy.

What are some other pistols that you that have more experience with Semi-autos would recommend?

Thanks in advance for all your help!!

I appreciate your dilemma.
Someday, I hope to get a .45, just because I don't have one...
The attachment is actually the .40 caliber version, but, you get the idea.

Being a Beretta enthusiast, my choice would be the Cougar 8045F.

If you're looking for the 1911 format, check out Auto-Ordnance, aka, Kahr Arms; aka, Thompson, as in machine gun.
The new models are reputedly very well made.
That would be my other choice.

Thanks for having the 7mm site. I'm also a 7mm Rem.Mag. enthusiast.

You didn't specify your budget ceiling, but if it's under $600 I would recommend a Colt Government Model. Colt was once the premier maker of handguns. In the 1990s they went in and out of bankrupcy and their QC suffered. The are now recovering, and the fit and finish of their new production is excellent.

BTW you can still find some of their older stock (marked M1991A1) at a discount in some areas. Same gun, just uglier rollmarks.

I'm partial to Glocks myself, but that shouldn't make up your mind.

What have you tried at the range?

If you're planning on spending up to $600, you should be able to find several options to fill the bill.

I also would reccomend the Colt Government model . My Dad is
a big 45 nut lol , and i have shot many different 45's over the years , S&W , Glock , Norinco , Auto Ordanance , etc and i found
the Government model series 80 to be the best i've ever shot .
Very reliable .

I've gotten interested in the USP .45 since I saw on FL that it will shoot 45 Super without modification. On the HK website it says it will shoot +P+. I assume this would include 45 Super. This might make it a good all-around gun, including trail and camp for defense against bears and cougars, possibly. Right now I lug a Redhawk 44mag in the woods. Heavy. Gets old. Maybe the USP .45 with .45 Super will work well enough. I'm going to check this out. ~

The best???

Glock makes the best....... to that i say "Horse Hockey"

Glock pistols are good in thier own right, as are other makers of firearms, ie... Sig, H&K, Colt, etc.....

To claim that one brand of firearm is the best is merely the opinion of one person, just as saying one particular caliber is above all the rest is pure folly.

If that were true why than are there all the differing brands of weapons and styles to meet the differing needs of many shooters.

No Glock is not the best, just one type of firearm that fits the needs of shooters who perfer them at the present time.

Best 45 pistol? i prefer 1911 style, there are many makes and models to choose from, the fun is finding that particular model that YOU SHOOT BEST!

I enjoy and own a Para P-14ltd in 45acp. What suits you is most likely different. Have owned and enjoyed shooting, Sig, Glock, H&K, S&W, handguns.

Each to his own!

Get a good 1911A1. I like Springfields, but you'll hear about Kimbers, Colts, etc. If its your first .45, its got to be a 1911.

.45 caliber choice

Greetings Jrslate . . .

The best kept secret .45 caliber is the CZ97B. Although not a 1911, it is a real shooter; accurate, smooth and soft recoil, holds sight aligment easily because of barrel length and over all weight and is crafted carefully and with good material. Besides, it is a fine looking handgun.

It is not, however, the pistol for people with small hands nor is it easy to carry concealed. Otherwise, it is as good as a weapon as my more expensive 1911's.

I paid $429 NIB from a local dealer. My Kimber cost more than twice that amount and my Wilson four times that figure.

Good luck in your choice.

If you're going to take it on one of those safaris from your sigline, perhaps a Springfield V-16 in .45 Super Express might be the ticket?

Factory claimed ballistics for this cartridge are impressive; 185gr XTP @ 1400fps/805fpe, 230gr XTP @ 1300fps/722fpe.

You may need to swap out recoil springs to shoot standard .45ACP through this ported longslide 1911-type, but since the chamber dimensions are identical to .45 ACP, there's no need to swap barrels.

Outside of 1911's, the other really nice .45's on the market right now are the SIG P-220's, HK USP 45's, and the Glock G21/G30/G36.

Haven't had much in the way of hands on with the new CZ-97, but the only one I've seen in action at the range was an absolute tackdriver.

Tamara - there is a Springfield V-16 longslide in 45super at a gun shop i frequent.

Looks to be i very good shape, whats a fair price for it??

The kimbers Can be had at many differant prices and IMO is a great gun out of the box. Another recommendation would be the
HK USP 45's, Here is a picture of one. Very good and very reliable.

MSRP from Springfield is $1080, Blue Book gives nine bills for 98% and $730 for 95%.

HTH! :)

Greeting's All,

As you probably know, there are many excellent choice's out
there. The range is as about as wide as one's wallet will allow.
As most members here will attest to, my personal favorite is
the time-tested and proven reliable Sig-Sauer P220A. It's like
a good neighbor, "always there when you need it". Besides
being a full size, light weight autoloader the craftsmanship
is superb. Other great choice's offering a SA/DA tigger system
are H&K's USP and the new Beretta; the latter of which I have
not tested. Some serious single actions are Colt's 1991A1,
Kimber. Sringfield's loaded model, and of course the high-
priced custom model's. Another consideration with a great
value, is the Chineese made Norinco. For about $325-$350
bucks, these are great shooter's; and offer an excellent base
for building a "custom model". On the "high end" dollar mark
check out a series 70 Colt Gold Cup National Match; this gun
is simply out-standing in every respect.

Best Wishes,
Ala Dan, Life Member N.R.A.

What is your spending limit? The title is "Best .45 Auto Pistol", but then you say Kimbers a too spendy? Come on. The Infinity pistols can cost $5000, talk about spendy.

Best? That's what offers you good quality, value, reliable, accurate, and fits the budget.

Best for me is a Glock 21. Two inch groups at 25 yards. Holds 14 rounds for home defense. And I can hunt with it with a 6" 40Super barrel that gets me power exceeding 10mm ballistics.

Or maybe you're a Sig man. then the P220 is awesome. had one. Loved it.Or tonyz's recommendation. notbubba No way on the P245. Sig just chopped the P220 and that baby feels off balance. Look for all of the posts around here. Shot it and prefer the original.

Just like the Glock 30 and the G36. Nice for CCW but at the range their shorter grips can count aginst you at 20 plus yards. If you're not CCWing it, go full-sized if your hands like it. Love Glocks but not all of them.

If you want a polymer 1911 that is accurate, then tonyz is right. The USP 45 compact or full sizeds are nice. shot them a dozen times.

Or maybe you like 1911s. Appears as if Kimber is the choice of many shooters and the fit and finish is worth every penny. don't get a cheap 1911 and spend a lot of money to get it to where a good Kimber or Para would have started you at.

Or you could just get a SW 625. My favorite revolver. From 185 to 250 grainers, it throws them hard to POA. And feeds SWCs always.
